Does inactive CPA need work exp?

    I’m an international student here at US. I’m not guarantee to stay in the US after graduation. However, I still prefer to pass all 4 sections of AICPA exam because it would be a great resume builder back to my home country.

    I have to plan for the worst, if I didn’t get a job at the US, it’s almost impossible for me to get CPA licensed here. Therefore I plan to get a inactive CPA before going home.

    I searched online that most “inactive CPAs” are prior licensed CPAs. Which means they have exp before and decided to switch to inactive. My question is that generally speaking, is it possible to get inactive CPA right after completing CPA exams without any US accounting working exp?

    Thank you for addressing my concerns.

    Pretty sure the only way to be an inactive CPA is to have previously been a fully licensed CPA in good standing. Do you have a masters degree? You may be able to get a non reporting license in MA.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

    Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

    @gytdyt

    You can apply to a two-tier state like Delaware where you can get a CPA certificate and later on apply for Permit to practice when you have the required work experience. I have also heard about non-reporting CPA license, you might want to check with MA board of accountancy and learn more about it.

    Depends on the state!

    A handful of states are two tier CPA states. They're quickly going to the one tier CPA states.

    Illinois closed their Registered CPA door in 2012 (I got one of the last ones) – it needs no CPE or experience requirement, but I cannot represent anyone in front of the IRS. All I have to do is pay a license fee every 3 years for this one.
