I am wondering if anyone has regreated the field of accounting they initially went into (Audit, Tax, Internal Audit, Staff Accountant in industry, etc.) and if so, what helped you to find the field you’re currently in? I currently work at a University as a staff accountant but I am currently in school (post-bacc) to get my masters in accounting (tax track). I like what I do at my current job, when I’mactually busy, and I don’t want to get a masters in tax and begin working in tax, only to realize that I like working as a Staff Accountant.

    What I like about tax:

There is a need for more tax accountats

    It’s a value added field.

With IRS updates, there is always something new to learn

I like teaching people how to lower their tax liability. (I’m a former teacher).

My wife is an actuary and really has me considering it. I love accounting, but I'm not sure if I'm ever going to be able to do what I want where I am. If you enjoy taxes in school, I'm sure you have a good chance of enjoying your career. Not that I would know.

    BEC - 83 7/25
    REG - 76 5/2/15
AUD - Hopefully before MY Audit...7/5?
    FAR - 83 5/2/16

Healthcare sucks. When you're in public accounting, you're at the front lines making sales for the company. If you leave for any other industry, you'll be put on the back-burner “support” side of the company. If you're not in sales (anywhere) you're a second class citizen. I have a computer that moves at dial-up speed, but I can't get a new computer because it's not critical for patient care.

My uncle and step mom both went into accounting and said AVOID ACCOUNTING. Now here I am with a BA in Acct, MBA in Finance, and studying for the CPA. I will probably not move into accounting but it is good to have.

    Journey Started - January 2015
    FAR - 4/2015 - Passed
    AUD - 7/2015 - Passed
    BEC - 8/2015 - Passed
    REG - 11/12/2015 - Passed

But isnt being an actuary worse than accounting? The statistics and quantitative hell it is. Makes accounting seem like a liberal art

I wondered if anyone actually wanted to become a dentist before they decided to become an accountant since dentists which i read seems to have the highest suicide rate risk.

Nope. I sit in a cube 9 – 5:30 most days and mess around with a spreadsheet all day for pretty good pay. Jobs pretty low stress and at least half of what I do I'd probably consider interesting. AND I'm not that smart or charismatic of a person so I think I have it pretty good actually :).

I was really close to becoming a teacher, I taught some Junior Achievement classes and changed my mind quickly. But if I could make money doing something else, I would probably be a project manager or teach at the collegiate level

I was an electronics tech before I got laid off and decided to go into accounting. Sometimes, I see job openings that pop up in my former field and wonder what it would be like if I never went back to school, or I see a sporting event on TV, and I wonder if the company I used to work for built the scoreboards and displays, and if they would have sent me there to work on them. But then I think about how nice it is to not be working in the rain or on a ladder or burning myself with a soldering iron, and I realize it isn't so bad.
