Just curious, how many people actually hate or dislike accounting but still do it anyway for a variety of reasons and benefits like job security, low unemployment rate, decent pay, etc.?

I really dont like accounting. I’d go so far as to say I hate it for some of the topics. Other topics not so bad. It takes everything I have to get my ass up and to study for the CPA and some days I’m like “ok this isn’t so bad” and other days I will not want to crack open a book for 3 days. The thought of doing certain accounting makes me want to just sleep. I’m not really complaining but it’s a good position to be in and problems are all relative. Some people would kill for my degree and job prospects but to me, I am in my late 20s and I have one last chance to pursue what I want to do.

There are many different areas of accounting but for the most interesting.. say IT Audit, it’s reasonable at best. I would never be like “I can’t wait to get up and do work”. And yet I can’t seem to ditch it due to the positive aspects of it. I feel like it would be a great thing to fall back on.

Working is less painful than studying though. I’m definitely smart enough to pass the CPA and the parts that I have interest and motivation in, I do ok because it has my full attention. But there are some parts like FAR where it will take everything and more for me to really study it.

Sometimes I think about going into something completely unrelated and going into an entry level position and starting over.. But the grass is always greener I guess…..

If money wasn’t an issue, I would work in the creative space. But very hard to find a decent job there. Ain’t that always the problem.

So I am in my late 20s. I have 4 years Big4 experience straight out of school. I left last year and have been working as a sales man for my family business, I did not take a pay cut but have the added incentive of commission.

I can easily say I enjoy the sales aspect much more than I ever liked accounting. I worked in BIG4 for experience and connections. I did not start studying for my CPA, because I know in ten years without it, I will be middle class. Who the hell wants to be middle class!?!?!

I love accounting. My mom has been a bookkeeper as long as I can remember, and I grew to love it hanging around the CPA's she worked for. I work in industry at the moment, but truly enjoy what I do. The only reason I don't always jump out of bed ready to go to work is because I'm tired (sometimes my 2 yr old decides 3 am is a good time to play).

I guess my dislike for accounting isn't just accounting. It's also other financial numbers and stuff. I mean I don't hate it and I'm very good with numbers but it's a matter of “Do i really want to dedicate my life to doing this for like another 50 years?” and the answer… Maybe. ha

looks like a lot of people do it for the money and do it because it's practical, it's offered online, etc. and that's why I chose it over something else. Unfortunately sounds like I just really am not fond of office jobs. But I guess the fact of life is, office job generally = more pay, cushier. boring. Non-office job = on your feet all day, less pay, physical labor.

The inbetweeners like auditing, sales or real estate is also cool but more risk.

Before my disability, I was prepping to be a firefighter and a paramedic. That would've been my dream job.. oh well life throws you curve balls

I love accounting. Love doing bank rec or something else and see numbers tie out or looking for an error and finding it – it's very satisfying. But I do have somewhat compulsive personality so it makes sense. A lot of accountants I see are like that too

I would be concerned if you hate accounting in general or broadly. We all have bad days at work and boring projects and such, but if you are super-bored you need to branch out and get more challenging work.

I love accounting. I love working with numbers on a daily basis, reading about tax law, reconciling, deadlines (I work better under pressure), and presenting reports that I've put my heart and many hours into! It's very rewarding 🙂 I dislike days when I'm doing monotonous things and I'm not challenged and have no set deadlines 🙁

Don't spend your life doing what you don't love. I'm 36 and regret I didn't take the CPA exam before now. I could have had my own firm by now, but I don't. It really sucks getting older and realizing you are not where you want to be.

I wouldn't say that I hate it but is it what I dreamed about doing? No, definitely not but I had to eat and support myself completely during college and accounting pays really well. I've come to accept after many years that my “9 to 5” maybe not be an occupation that I love but while I'm being paid well and moving up through management I can use the $$ and skills I'm developing to do support things that I do love. For instance volunteering to assist on tax returns for military families or donating money to worthy causes or helping a not-for-profit small business get themselves off the ground by donating time. When I look at it that way, its makes it easier to accept that this is what I do for a living. There are days where the work is fun because a great project comes my way or I'm searching for money that is owed to us. I'm almost 40 now with a mortgage and a family to think about so starting over at this point after 18 years in the field is unrealistic.

@kettlecorn, very well-put. However, I think accounting for me represents stability and growth. I mean you suffer now for a couple of years but once you make it to the top in management role, isn't it about delegating?

I'm starting to hate accounting too. After years of loving this career, I'm starting to wonder if I should have studied Humanity, Psychology, or Art history. If money wasn't the issue, I don't think I would be an accountant.

@Martin, I live in Miami, and I have seen lots of pretty young accounting ladies in the Coral Gables area (went for an interview in a firm that looks like a plastic surgery clinic, those women looked like they were taken out of a magazine). I'm 26 years old good looking accountant lady (married and off the market of course). I'm normally the youngest of all places I've worked for, which had made me feel at little weird while working with so many old people.

I hate the clerical work involved with accounting in the early positions but I like the future of it. To make analysis, market forecast, make recommendation to improve the business and company profitability. That's what I am looking for, not making journal entries and reconciliations all day long.

Auditing was more interesting to me but working 90 hours a week and around 50% travel was too much
