Does an employee referral really give you a leg up to get a job?

I’m looking at a staff auditor position. I 100% meet the qualifications. Initially I applied and got rejected. Then I found out I passed FAR.

I emailed the staffing lady at the company politely asking her to reconsider my resume having passed the FAR exam. I have a friend who is young, but pretty high up in the company. He’s gotten a lot of promotions over the years. He said he’d be very willing to help.

So when the lady suggested I reapply, I put his name down for a referral. He just informed me today he accepted the Referral Request and sent a note to HR.

Has anyone seen this work to their favor?

Yes, it is very helpful, it usually gives you a good chance of getting looked at and/or an interview.

I'm really hoping I get a second look since they turned me down the first time!

@Tcohle, Yes, it does! Employers would rather hire someone that they can rely on/trust. If an employee knows you and knows your work and can vouch for you, it is a much better shot than someone they have no idea about. In my experience, employee referrals can be the deciding factor (assuming you qualify and everything). Goodluck!

Depends on who is giving the referral to be honest. A first year associate's approval obviously does not mean as much as a 10th year partner. With that said, anything to help you stick out from everyone else is always a good thing.

helps but your chances are also affected by luck. if theyre hiring or someone left and they usually ask around to see if anyone knows anyone. if they give their boss your resume and its good enough for a phone call, you're in. then it's your job to sell yourself.

in my experience a referral doesnt help you get the job it just gets your resume actually looked at. for any entry level position HR is going to get hundreds and hundreds of resumes and will maybe give you a 10 second look. a referral gets you a 1 min look.

thats been my experience anyway. your results may vary 😀

Referrals typically get you an interview. After that, the ball is 100% in your court. I had a professor from college refer someone to me and after talking to them, I referred them for our summer internship program. Needless to say, he did not make it further than the first round of interviews.

I landed my current job because of an employee referral. I think it was extremely helpful in the interview process. Best of luck.
