I know auditors will frequently be required to visit the client sites, but what about tax people? Do tax people always work in the firm’s office all day or do they go out and travel too?

My understanding is that the travel in very minimal compared to Audit.

Only time we ever go out to the client is to help clean up their accounting but this is super rare.

The tax accountants I know do not travel at all. Everything is done from the luxury of their office/cubicle.

Every engagement I was on in public, the tax team came out at least for a few days during year end.

At my current company the auditor's tax team came out quite often. But that's because our company was going through some major tax issues and we were changing our worldwide org. structure. (changing locations of HQ in different regions for tax benefits).

I am curious about this as well, specifically in local or regional firms.

Travel is typically minimal. It's going to depend on the company you work for and the client's needs. I work in a small office of 3 people, and we have a few clients that we visit a couple of times a year. Typically quarterly and at year end, and on rarer occasion to fix a software issue/updates.
