Screw up a tax return and get yelled at … you'll become more detailed.

Simple really, double check your work. Whether it's a tax return, financial statement, etc. document your work as you go and review the finished product as a whole. Does it make sense? Does it tie back to your detail/source documents?

I'm amazed sometimes by the simple errors I catch this way.

One thing I've told someone at my work who has trouble with details – when you finish what you just worked on, set aside, and then come back and review it as if you are reviewing someone else's work. You will probably find plenty of errors that way. Self-review is so super important.
