I’ve accepted a job at one of the big 4 but would really like to defer for a year to try my hand at a start-up. Is this a bad reason to tell them when requesting to defer?

Yes, it is a bad idea. Start-ups need experienced people. It is much harder to build a company from scratch than to work in an established company.

It is the difference between reading a book and writing a book.

Only those with established experience should consider a start-up.

I'm all for people going the startup route instead of established work, but you may not be able to have your cake and eat it too.

I know the Big 4 have programs where you can defer your start date for up to 2 years for programs like Teach For America, but I'm fairly certain they won't let you defer your offer to basically take another job.

If you want to take the offer, be prepared to decline your offer and have to go through the process again if/when you want to rejoin.

Get some real world experience than you can consider going start up. I imagine “trying your hand at a start up” does not offer you a steady pay check and a great resume builder.
