So I am almost done with the CPA exam and am wondering about the whole credit check thing for employment. Does anyone know or anyone had recent experiences with being denied a job because of credit? I had a few blemishes when i turned 21 years old and they are still on my CR, although they were delinquent and now paid off. Now Im 25 and graduated about to start my career, do you think this is gonna be a big deal when i look for employment as a staff accountant in a public firm? My debts were primarily a credit card that i maxed out, a cell phone bill that was maxed, and a defaulted loan personal loan that was defaulted when there was $1500 left on it. Please weigh in if you had any experiences as i am freaking out about this and debating on whether i need to do a career change.

Employers do look at your credit. Might wanna check it. That was 4 years ago and might not impact you as much as you think.

Hopefully I can be help considering I went through this.

First some background. When I was young 20/21 I ran into issues as well. Defaulting on a car loan and being sent to collections for that and several credit cards. A few years pass and I began working with the collections to pay them off.

While all of this is still on my credit report most of it payed off but 2 are still delinquent. I applied for firms through OCR this past fall.

Now, I was offered several positions. My advice is to let them know once you receive an offer. I told them the second I was offered that some things will come up on my credit report. They said they would look on it and let me know.

It can be stressful waiting for a response. One firm had someone from the corporate office contact me and ask me to provide documentation, which makes me come to my second piece of advice. SAVE all documentation regarding your credit issues and make copies. I was asked to send her proof of settlements, proof that I have been in contact with the other two issues I still had not resolved. I saved copies of cashiers checks sent to them, of letters I sent them and they sent me, receipts. Basically everything.

The result, both firms passed me through the credit check and I start this summer with one of them. They both realized through my actions and my explanations to them that I made mistakes when I was younger and I have taken steps to correct them.

So, will all firms be like this? Probably not. However, be upfront and honest and work at fixing your problems if you haven't yet. A lot of firms realize people are flawed and it's their actions after mistakes that show character. So good luck in your job search! I'm sure you will land a great job.
