CPA VS APPLICATION

This is more of a venting thread for me. (sorry for the disappointment)

Work at a firm for 2+ years, not licensed (working on it). I bust a$$ daily to pick up slack for other people. No reward for busting ass, no consequence for the ones who i’m busting ass because their lack of motivation or need to do more than what is told.

THEN… my nemisis finds out he passed the last portion of his exam. I have to hear everyone that passes by his damn office (we’re neighbors) that he’s passed…which in effect i have to hear everyone he tells jump for joy. Don’t get me wrong, i’m happy for the guy… but him passing the exam, yes benefits us in the long run, but if you can’t apply your damn knowledge and do your work… how does that help me?

Becoming license i think is just ONE of the MANY ‘characteristics’ an auditor should possess… yes, it’s what you’ll need to go further in your career… but so does a lot of other things like APPLYING YOUR KNOWLEDGE TO WORK, SEEKING RESPONSIBILITY, and the ABILITY TO BE THOROUGH ON YOUR JOBS AND WRAP THEM UP TIMELY… (That’s me venting)

So my question… yes, passing the exam helps you climb the ladder… but don’t you think APPLICATION is also a BIG part of it as well?

What’s your thoughts on CPA vs APPLICATION.

I think of it like… people who are book smart, but sure damn aren’t street smart.

(for those who are curious, i’m working on passing my exams… so even though i’m ‘one-sided’ to this CPA+Application – i’ll get there…soon)

Today, I became a cool kid.

…i guess i'll just have to work harder on passing my exam. I just hate to think that I busted ass this year and because he passed his exam he'll get most of the bonus pool… compensating someone who didn't help much throughout the year.

    venting…again.

    Hi saucesah that is frustrating.

I think everyone would agree you benefit the company a lot more by being able to apply the skills needed to do the work.

But unfortunately, I think when it comes to work and reward, many companies base it on politics. Sometime the “who” not the “what”.

I've noticed that the work I do for outside managers gets me a lot more immediate credit and recognition than the work I do for my direct supervisor. However, it's my supervisor that sets my raise and bonus amounts each year. If I want additional compensation, she is the one I need to look good to. So I am always sure to answer to her and go above and beyond to get her what it she needs first.

Additionally, the accountants that are below me in rank, will ignore my instructions, because they too know who sets the pay.

Therefore, I end up doing a lot of their work because if it's not done or if it's done incorrectly, I'm the one that has to explain it.

It seems like your company rewards credentials instead of application alone. It sucks, but sometimes those 3 letters are all you need for your work to be appreciated.

    Best luck!

@saucesah…sorry about the frustration, but I guarantee you will stop venting once you got your CPA. :-).

I ran into many CPAs who are nice, but I also encoutered CPAs who never missed an opportunity to let you know that he is a CPA. Somehow, I appreciate the latter kind of CPAs 'cause he gave me this motivation no one would even give to study hard and pass the exams. Everytime I ran into him at the elevator, I studied extra hours at that night.

    @ CPA-Convertible

That's a good way of looking at it… i'll try and gear my fustration toward studying. Maybe something good will come out of it. 🙂

Could not agree more Saucesah. CPA=licencse to slack here where I work (small firm 8-9 CPAs). There is zero reward for a non-license holder's extra effort. It sometimes reminds me of the movie Office Space where the guy that does no work and drifts in and out of the office at-will gets a promotion, while the other guys who really care about their jobs get laid off.

We have people that disappear during the day with no explanation, people who slip in and out of the back door so nobody knows when they come and go, are no-shows on weekends in the heart of tax season, take vacations in the heart of tax season, etc., but they have the magic letters. Meanwhile I am here through all of that picking up the slack, feeling like a true sucker.

I collect a paycheck every week so in that I can't complain. But I would be lying if I said it didn't get to me sometimes. Like CPA-Convertible said, I try to turn that frustration into motivation to pass the remaining sections.

Well take some comfort knowing that in every career and in every place of employment this goes on. I remember when I was a staff accountant without a degree, the 2 girls WITH degrees were princesses who didn't need to do anything and reaped rewards while I was treated like a dog, cleaning up their messes while they were treated to trips and lunches.

My husband works in a machine shop, he is the one who does everything from operating the machines to painting the floors when needed. Guess whose raise is always the last to go through? Guess who is the LAST one to be offered overtime on the rare occasion it is available?

All jobs are political b.s. and the people willing to get their hands dirty are rarely the ones who get promotions and raises. Why would they? The company is milking exactly what they want/need out of the person on the lowest possible salary.

But I'd rather feel like I was being overlooked for my hard work ethic, than feel guilty (and I personally would) for getting perks I didn't earn.
