CPA really is worth it

I know everyone’s experience is different, but I thought I’d share something for those struggling with the exam, and maybe even wondering if all this is worth it. I haven’t even finished yet, and it already become WELL worth it.

I work for Goodwill (not exactly “public accounting”!). I just recently passed REG, which puts just one section from my license. Today I was promoted at my job from a $44k position to a $60k position, with additional compensation to come once I pass the exam and get my license. This is a position previously held by a CPA/MBA.

My point is this – they would probably never even have considered me for the position if I wasn’t successfully going for my CPA. Obviously not everyone will reap immediate (or even early) rewards for tackling the CPA, but sooner or later it will pay off. Maybe even sooner than you ever imagined!

So good luck, everyone. Keep on hammering out those lectures/chapters/MCQs/SIMs/notes. All those weary and hopeless moments will eventually be worth it.

    AUD - 79
    BEC - 88
    REG - 87
    FAR - 86 - Woot, all done!
    Ethics - 100

Congratulations on the promotion! And thanks for sharing your story, it gives me hope as I'm just starting the journey but already struggling to find another job.

Not to rain on your parade but I'm sure that the fact you were promoted has a little, maybe |<—->| that much to do with the good job you've been doing! 😀

But I get what you are saying. I started my new position in July of last year and it has been nothing short of stellar, I am just doing what I do and I keep getting recognized by the most senior of Executives. Of course, I work for a VP who gives me all the heavy lifting projects–but hey, he puts me out there to bat and let's me swing for the fences. Funny for 12 years in two different companies before my current company, not a peep of gratitude or reward….now I feel like I'm Keith Urban at the CMA awards, just one after another. Anyhoo, a new position just came open for a Manager and while I didn't apply, I think that had I been done with my CPA they might have ‘suggested' I apply. The other staff assumed it was being opened up for me. Instead they hired a displaced worker and honestly, just the way I am, I'd rather see a family man with kids who is unemployed in this environment get the job even if it costs me a promo in the short run.

I have a feeling that as soon as I get my CPA, new doors will open. Provided I'm alive….and married….and have kids that will talk to me….and and and.

Congrats on your new job! It's always great to get a promotion, I've never actually applied for a promotion inside of the company, they've all been given to me as a reward. Before the last two turd companies I worked for, I was averaginig a promotion ever 14 months. I think I am back on track.
