    Hey All,

I am working in one of the big 4 audit firm and currently I am studying for CPA. I have 4+ year experience in this audit firm and looking for a change. I am confused if i will be able to complete CPA if I join a non auditing firm.

I am planning to get into internal audit function and wanted to check if I will be working under a CPA in a company and if I pass all the exams, will I be able to get the CPA license considering my past public accounting experience and the experience in internal audit?

What state are you getting your CPA in? I ask because each state has different requirements to get your license.

I am in IL and they require 1 year of experience. I spent 2 years in public therefore I am covered off on my 1 year of experience. I just have to call them up and ask them to fill out the experience form when it is time to apply for my license. If I am correct you do not need to pass all parts and then wait another year or two to get the experience after you pass your tests. If you have experience then pass all four parts you can use your experience you already have.

If you have spent 4+ years in public I think you should be ok with checking off the experience no matter what state. I hope this is what you are asking?

    AUD - 69, 77
    REG - 74, 81
    FAR - 75!
    BEC - 71, 82

Does the non-auditing firm have CPAs you'll be working under? If not, you will need your prior firm (or the one you're still with I guess) to sign off on your hours one you've completed the exam. If you're not working with CPAs, they cannot sign to license you. But I agree with @jessica, it sounds like you have already met the experience requirement by a long shot.

Not every state requires the experience to be under a licensed CPA. Every state is different so this completely depends on that.

Tennessee says that any CPA who has personal knowledge of you working in accounting can sign off on your 1 year experience required for licensure. That CPA does not need to be a supervisor. In order for a CPA to be eligible to sign off on financial reports for a firm, you need 2 years experience in audits and/or reviews.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your valuable replies. Your replies are really a new hope outside audit firm. I have registered with Alaska board, wondering if anyone have any experience with getting CPA license from Alaska with prior experiences.
