Hello!

I have a question about my CPA hours in California.
I have worked for my company for over a year and they have stated when the time comes they will sign off on my CPA hours. My direct boss isn’t a CPA but the other accounting manager is as well as some people in upper management.

I am thinking of accepting a position at a new job.
When I finish all my CPA exams, could my old job refuse to sign off on my CPA hours saying that my DIRECT supervisor wasn’t a CPA, even though right now they are saying they would sign off on them?

In my new position my boss would be a CPA and there are several CPAs in the company, so worst case scenario I would have to work there a year before I could submit the paperwork.

However, I’m asking because I want to be prepared and know what could happen before I accept the position.

So any CPA has the ability to decline to sign off on experience for whatever reason, even if you performed your work perfectly… Which is annoying.
However; from what I hear in CA, there is a channel that you can go through where you can almost force their hand through the CA CPA board. I'm not sure I would want to follow that route because it seems like it would make things hairy between you and your previous employer. There is not a channel like that in Texas.
I left my previous job in CA and moved back to Texas and my previous boss' boss (the Controller) was happy to sign off as I left on a good note and she was the primary high level reviewer of my work. Just make sure to leave on a good note and keep in contact following an I'd hope they'd be willing to sign off. But people can also suck… Best of luck!
