This is a bit random, but I’ve trying to brainstorm potential ways I can start my own business after I get my CPA and a few more years of experience under my belt. The catch is that I don’t want to do tax/bookkeeping and I don’t want to travel too much. These conditions make it very difficult to come up with many ideas outside of a website business of some sort. Has anyone else thought about this at all? I have 1.5 yrs audit experience (ag coops, 401k plans, credit unions) and about 0.5 yrs experience doing Renewable Fuels Standard RIN accounting (this is my current job; I also am starting to do our work w/ Cali’s LCFS).

This is pretty much my dream. I am focusing on coming up with my idea after my CPA exam. Hoping it will just hit me like lighting one day πŸ˜‰

    BEC: 73, 81
    AUD: 85
    FAR: 71, 77
    REG: 74, 75...finally DONE! πŸ˜€

*This is my 2nd attempt at the CPA exam. For all of you who have failed this exam many times, given up on it, or taken a break like me, remember that it is still possible to finish what you started...failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently πŸ™‚

You have to be passionate about your own business or it will be worse than the job you're leaving.

Just because you become a CPA doesn't mean you have to do accounting…your accounting skillz translate well to managing a non-related business of your own.

I have been thinking about how to continue the already established tax/bookkeeping business and gain the audit experience necessary for a reporting license. How can I proceed and manage without a conflict of interest? Or will another firm require me to close my business in order to get the audit (cpa sign off) experience?

    It begins with a 75

The tax side wouldn't be a problem (assuming they're not public companies), but I would think that you couldn't do both bookkeeping and audit. The firm I used to work at would put together F/S for clients (along w/ the rep letter comment about how that's a control? issue; it's a been a while), but that was as far as we would go. Though, sometimes it felt like we were doing their accounting because we'd be making lots of AJE's especially with tax accruals…
