I hate cover letters. HATE them! I never know what to say, how to say it, etc. Does anyone have a good source for advice and/or samples?

How do you say, “I meet your requirements and I would like an interview, call me!”

    Help!

    REG - 89
    BEC - 82
    FAR - 87

    ReneeNC,

My career advisor says you should tell them where you heard of the position and why you are interested:

“I am writing to apply for the Administrative Officer position – an opportunity I learned about from

J_____ F_______, VAMC Credentialing Specialist. This position appeals to me because it offers me the opportunity to use my professional skills in conjunction with my lived experiences as a veteran to help ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and regulatory compliance for the VISN 23 Health Care Network.

Then you should highlight 3-4 bullet points:

Listed below are the qualifications I possess that would enable me to make a significant contribution to the VISN 23 Health Care Network IT department:

    • In several positions I have developed budgets and ensured expenditures were carried out according to agency guidelines

    • As the ____________, I had the opportunity to oversee a variety of administrative programs and to interact with individuals of varied backgrounds while working toward mutual goals

    • Several previous positions charged me with identifying problems and inefficiencies then developing recommendations for solutions

    • I recently completed 66+ contact hours of skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Project which will help me formulate findings and present the results in a more professional manner

    • I am able to successfully deliver results both independently as well as collaboratively.

I am available to discuss my qualifications further at your convenience. I can be contacted at (800) ___-____. Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Renee NC

My Advisor noted that if you can throw in a name (how you heard of the position) you are networking and usually knowing someone on the inside goes a long way (at least much further than if someone like myself applied who doesn't know a soul on the inside of the company)
