Contacting Recruiters

    Hey guys,

I am looking for some help in my job search. Can anyone advise me on how they got into contact with recruiters for their local job markets. I no longer live in the area where I attended college, and all my post degree work to fill education requirements was done at a local community college, which hasn’t been very helpful.

I am making a career transition from a completely different industry which has been testing my job search skills. On the bright side I have two exams done ( 1 passed, 1 pending) and have been doing some part time bookkeeping the last few months. I figured after two exams my chances of finding work would increase.

I was thinking of using some of my inmails with linkedin to contact local recruiters since I am still an entry level hire. I would appreciate any feedback on this idea, or others that might help. Thanks a lot guys and gals.

I was in the same position as you considering I just graduated and went to school out of state. My advice is to go onto one of the major universities websites and use the search function to see if you can find somewhere in the business school where they list the local recruiter's name and email/phone number. I know Mizzou and KU had that for me when I was searching. Once you find that list or do a basic google search and find what you need start contacting recruiters now especially if you are out of state because I know Big 4 firms have their “target” schools they go after hard so you will have to knock their door down early. If they don't respond to your emails, send them again until they do. The summer is their least busiest time so you need to get your name on their list basically. Hopefully that helps!

My advice would be to network with close friends, families, boyfriend, Girlfriend, niece, uncle, aunt, stepdaughter, grandmother, grandfather….

I am telling you from my experience, all the jobs that recruiters advertise is for the positions nobody wants to accept within the company. Its either a revolving door position or they know that the supervisor to whom they would report if they get the job is a total jerk.

I am fed up of linkdin too, i have asked recruiters not to contact me if the commute is too much and if its not in my pay scale, they still try to contact my seniors my boss, and try to network with them for potential future business.

I know i am going to get some disagreements, but this is my take and some of my colleagues that i work with , share the same feeling.

Thanks for the input so far everyone.

IfThereIsaGod, I am going to see what I can find on the local websites. I'm in the bay area so I have a lot of major universities to chose from. I'll see what I can come up with that route.

mena je twa Yea have been down the route of family, friends ect. I'm onto cousins at this point, none which are in accounting. However they are in more of a financial setting then my close family. I found your comment about the advertised jobs interesting, although working your career field with a not so perfect boss would be a 100 times better than what I have been through the last two years. Heck although not ideal I would even take a position with a high turnover rate just to get in the door.

    dbltrbl…

I know its frustrating, but hang in there…. You will get something or the other. You have no choice but to suck up to recruiters, so that you can get your foot in the door. Once you work in corporate america, you will understand what this recruiting business is all about… Yeah no doubt, i have gained advantage from them and they have placed me couple of times, but after a while you see it and then say WTF…

One example, not too long ago, i applied for a posting on monster, without letting my recruiter know about it. When we were discussing the same position , she was like” Oh, you applied yourself, now i can't help you with it”…In short, she will not get her commission since i applied on my own, so why bother even showing me the position…what a Biatch
