considering to study for CPA

So I am trying to figure out whether it makes sense for me to study for the CPA after reading some posts on this forum. I have read that there are some people who passed the CPA but don’t have much work experience with accounting and they are having a difficult time finding a job. So it makes them seem like they are over-qualified.

I have around 2 years doing temp work in various accounting jobs in the past. But now I have a permanent full-time job doing entry-level accounting work. In addition, I have a masters degree in accounting.

So, if I work at my current permanent job for 2 years and get the CPA (on top of my masters in accounting), will it still make me look over-qualified? Or will it make my resume look strong?

Over-qualified for what? I don't think people are having a hard time finding a job because they have their CPA. I think maybe some people expected the CPA to open doors for them, and maybe that hasn't happened yet (it will, tough). If you work at a firm doing entry-level work, wouldn't you want to get your CPA to further your career and get a position with more job responsibilities? Especially since you have your master's in accounting. I've never heard of someone deliberately choosing to not sit or the CPA exam because it will make they seem over-qualified. The whole point of this exam is to appear over-qualified. It separates the men from the boys.

I agree with you Determined CPA. I refused to buy into the stereotype that after passing he CPA exams and due to limited experience that I will seem overqualified. Sure it will be tough but someone sooner or later will give you an opportunity. You just got to be patient.

You got an entry level job with a masters degree. Pretty sure that negates the overqualified theory. Job market is tough, just adding a CPA to a resume doesn't get someone a job or lose one. So many other factors like experience, personality during an interview, and being the best fit.
