so i got a pretty strong referral from a family friend and my resume was first given to a Principal (which is one level below partner in this firm). I spoke with him on the phone and he immediately forwarded my resume to a partner in the group he thought i would be a good fit in. Principal and Partner then called me on speaker a week later to discuss positions and find out more about my background. A week later I got word that another Partner, who is the head of the entire department where i would be working, wants to set up a call for next week.

i have no idea what to make of this. i’m relocating to state where the firm is and everything has been conducted via telephone. at this point, if all goes well on my next call can i expect an offer? or will they first bring me in to interview and with who? i can’t talk to anyone higher at this point.

I would expect a face-to-face interview. Even when you have a personal referral, most companies will not hire without an in-person interview.

If distance is an issue, you might not get a face-to-face interview. But at this point, the more principles and partners who contact you the better. Often times someone has an interview day with these firms where they meet with all the major players in the firm for a brief period, but like I said if you are relocating this might not be possible so they are probably a little slow on the roll to get the telephone interviewers done.

Its a nerve-wracking time certainly but just let the process play out.

You might get an interview via Skype. More and more common these days.

At this point, who's left to interview with? Both partners, certainly the partner in charge of the entire department, can make hiring decisions at any time i'd imagine.

Probably come down to their preference; being phone interviewed by two partners could be enough to be hired, but they might want to make sure you're not Seth Davis from Boiler Room (slick on the phone, awkward in person lol) and want to have you out for another real interview or at least lunch or something–if they propose that, make sure its on their dime 🙂

Well the principal who originally got my resume knows i'm not Seth Davis. I think he's the one driving this train and could be vouching for me all the way up the train. Who knows though with these things.
