Confused about hiring process…

    Hello everyone,

I was offered an interview in the beginning of October. It seemed like everything went well during the interview. I was then told that I will be hearing from them in 2-3 weeks. I sent a thank you email after the interview. I got no response. After 3 weeks, I sent an email to my interviewer about the status of the position. Again, no response. I then called the office and asked if the hiring for the position is still in process. She then asked for my name and told me to hold. When she came back, she said that they are still making their decision and I will be hearing from them within the week. I will be getting a call or letter in the mail regardless if I get good or bad news. The week is over and still nothing.

I was wondering from everyone’s experience and perspective, does this mean that I didn’t get the offer and they can’t find the words to tell me that I won’t be offered the position? I really appreciate the feedback. =)

They could be waiting for a yes or no from the person/people they initially want to hire. I'm assuming they don't want to send a rejection letter to someone they could hire but isn't their first choice. At this point you may not receive the answer you want, but I would try to stay optimistic until you get a definite response. Good luck!

Thanks guys for the feedback! Again, I really appreciate it. I am very nervous and really want to work for the job I interviewed for. Since I don't have professional experience like this, I wanted to know from everyone's expertise on what they think this situation means. Thank you again guys! =)

I have to chime in here since I am having a nightmare of a time trying to find a job. I feel like the world has drastically changed in the last 8 years. I've been at my current, well-known and well respected in the area, company since 2006. It was not difficult to get this job, I was hired as a temp accounting clerk, still undergrad at the time. Now I have a BA, and a CPA, and I feel more useless than I did back then!

First of all, every place wants you to apply online and in every fashion imaginable. So you spend hours and hours on resumes that will never amount to anything. Then every place now wants to start with a phone interview. Well this is just fine and dandy if this is a screening with HR. However, when you are blindsided by suddenly being on a phone interview via speaker phone with 2 senior accountants and their manager who's position you would be filling – I wanted to die. One of my first HR interviews I was massively over prepared, so I went into the next under prepared just to be slammed with in-depth accounting questions. (I'm not the best on the spot, but I love to over prepare)

Then finally, after months of this madness, I was brought in to a real live person interview!! It was great! We clicked in that magical way!! Then weeks later they determined it would be best to hire from within. The only good news is this was the ONLY place that did follow up with me and let me know. Every other place promised to let me know either way – never heard from them again.

So I am equally confused about the “hiring process”. I don't know if this is all a result of our crappy economy or what. I know from other people in different fields it seemed you had to know someone to get hired in the recent past. If that is still the case I suppose I'm screwed.

You’re not screwed, it also depends on your current location and what the market situation is.

You might want to try out of state jobs if you are willing to relocate.

From the other side of the fence, when this happens, it usually means we are stil looking because we are hoping to find a better fit for the position but might settle for someone we already interviewed. OR, it could mean we have been told we cannot fill the position due to budget issues until the 1st of the year.

With year end, it is going to be tough with everyone being out for the holidays.

Also, see this thread. You have to approach getting a job like it is a full time job. You have to be assertive but be careful and don't go overboard into desperate.
