I am in tax and I work at a small public accounting firm in the greater NYC area. Year end is coming and I received my CPA license last month, I am going to get promoted to senior but I want to know what should my salary increase be over a non-certified person? I didn’t receive a bonus upon becoming a CPA, and I am the only person in my firm besides partners and senior managers to have it. In Big 4 firms, do certified employees get their credentials (MBA/CPA) taken into account when receiving raises/bonuses or is it strictly work performance based?

At Big 4 (at least back when I was in Big 4), they used to give us a bonus for passing all 4 parts of the CPA exam.

Fastest way of getting a raise? Go out and get a job offer from a competing accounting firm with higher salary. If your current firm wants to keep you, they will match.

I think most public accounting firms just give you a bonus. Mine does, anyway. And you can't get promoted to manager without being licensed. But with small firms, anything goes. They might decide to include it in your performance review and give you a raise because of it, or they might say “oh good for you” and ignore it. Best thing to do would be to ask someone internally.

Bonus on passing within first two years, no promotion to manager if eligible and no CPA. It moves from monetary to punitive depending on your level. A CPA firms doesn't get much out of you passing, you're still the same person doing the same work; having the exam done doesn't necessarily add much to your value within the firm while still performing the same roll. [this is my perspective at Big4, as mentioned, anything could happen at your firm.]
