I live in Omaha, NE and recently got a job offer. It would involve traveling around the midwest auditing small credit unions. It sounds like I would be traveling 60-70% of the time. Three out of every four weeks I would be gone driving to various small towns and would be gone Monday through Thursday living out of a hotel room. Most of the time I would be auditing these small credit unions on my own. It sounds like on average I would work 50 to 55 hours per week and would get paid 40k. My girlfriend is not really keen on the idea of me being gone all the time. I was wondering is this typical for an auditing job or is it more like 30%-50% travel? I currently have passed 2 out of my 4 exams. I’m leaning towards turning down the job and maybe looking for an auditing job with less travel or a staff accountant job. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, so I have no experience in auditing, but that sounds like a total grind. First, that salary seems really low. Second, that is a lot of hours per week. Third, travelling that much is going to take its toll on you and your relationship. I know (have heard) that the job market is really tough out there, but unless you have no other options, I would pass on this one. Do you think you'll have more opportunities once you pass all four sections? Do you need the money right now? There are a ton of considerations that only you know. I would just suggest doing what feels right.

I am not an auditor, but this job doesn't sound good to me at all. The salary is no good and you'll be doing this alone all the time.

Internal auditor (less or no travel) or staff accountant are better options than this.

I'm 31 & married (no kids), so my viewpoint may be a bit different 🙂

Currently I work part-time as teller, usually around 25 hours per week. I work in the mornings and then study all afternoon which works out pretty good. I live at home so I don't really need to money or have any big bills. I'm thinking that more job offers will come along especially after I pass all 4 parts. I understand that auditors have to travel a lot, but 60-70% seems like a really high percentage.

That is more travel than I had to do when I worked at a regional CPA firm. I probably traveled 40% of the time. Also I got paid a lot better than that for working around the same amount hours.

I would turn down the job and wait for something better. Traveling that much is not fun.
