    Hey everyone,

So i need some advice from people a little higher up in their career: I have about almost three years experience in accounting (between 3 companies, 1 was a job hop). I currently work for a large company in the private industry, and now that I have my CPA I am like totally confused as to how to go about moving up in my career. Yet, I am worried that I may be labeled a job hopper.

I currently make below the market rate for someone with my experience in my area, however, if I was to stay with my current company, I would most likely be able to move up to higher level positions by applying to different departments within the company. I also know that if I started applying for other jobs, I would probably be able to get a jump in pay, but I would most likely have to apply for staff level positions.

Does it look bad to make moves strictly for an increase in pay? Or should one focus increasing their level and responsibilities (promotional moves)?

TL;DR: John Doe is a Staff Accountant making 40k, but sees opportunity for 50k as a Staff Accountant at a different company, but could stay at company and in time eventually apply for Senior Accountant position, which would be better for John long term?

@jillybeans how can you have a title change that bumped you up to a high enough level to be able to participate in stock options, but think your worth in the eyes of your employer didnt change at all? That really doesnt make sense.

I had to fight for a title change. It was not handed to me.

3 jobs in 3 years is a bit much. I just left my last job after 3.5 years when leaving a different VP (not mine, but one that i did a little work for) called me into his office for like 30 min to talk about my new job (with a diff company). His purpose was to tell me to make sure that i stayed at the new job for a much longer period of time (unless i could tell it was shit, in that case get out asap). His reasoning is that when someone looks at your resume and see you leave after 3 years they wont hire you because its a pain in the ass to go through the hiring process and training process every three years…just not worth the risk. therefore the only jobs you are going to get are crappy jobs (where they cant be as picky) and that will make it harder to move on because you have a crappy job on the resume (i am in tax in a decent sized big city and still, everyone knows the good and bad places to work for tax). His point was (and he literally had no ulterior motives since i never worked for him and there wasnt ever a chance to work for him) to be careful changes jobs and really really really make sure you know why you are doing it.

    anyway…my $.02
