i am trying to determine next steps in my career after my first year in public accounting

I began public accounting after working several years in industry.

I very much enjoy my job because I found industry to be boring and that, at least for me, it was not a respectful job. I feel there is a higher level of professionalism and respect in public accounting.

When I worked in industry, there was little respect for accountants outside our department. That was my experience from several industry jobs.

So, I work for a small to mid firm (approx 60 employees).

I am wondering if I should consider a larger firm?

Most posts about the Big 4 are about getting a few years there and getting out to industry. I have no interest in industry.

What about the people who stick around?

I mostly do tax for my firm and I am a CPA

I started in public (tax) and I like it. Ignoring the possibility of some pie in the sky offer, I have no intention of going industry. The way I personally look at it is 1) how are you paid compared to market, 2) what is your promotion potential and timeline at your current firm, and 3) how do you like the people you work with?

I'm currently in a big 4 firm, but I'm not sure it can really offer you much more than what you have depending on what the answers to those questions are. If you get paid well, get promoted in a timely manner (make partner one day if you want?), and like the people you work with, then I would say it's actually kind of dangerous to move to any firm, and maybe especially a big 4.

When I was recruiting, I took the offer at the firm at which I interned because I figured it was better to work for the devil you know. Even if your current work experience is only decent, it could get a lot worse on a move. Heck, even in the same firm and even in the same office I see people in positions I'd hate to be in.

I appreciate the response and insight.

I do know that I am getting underpaid as someone who left my firm for a bigger firm with very little experience and no CPA is making 15% more than me.

You seem happy where you are now. If money is your only reason then I'd poke around and see what you can get, but don't jeopardize what you have now for 15% now.

Do you see yourself being able to make as much as you want to make at your current place of employment? If so, just work towards that for now.

I was wondering if you need to have a Master’s in Tax to get a tax job in public accounting.

I’ve been working in industry for several years and have now begun studying for the CPA.

No masters, obtained my bachelors at 29, small state school, recruited by big 4 firms… Public requires you to have good grades and have 150 credits, but most importantly demonstrate maturity and be able to hold an intelligent conversation… You are in the business of business – that's what I tell others looking to get into public.

I don't think you need a masters. A CPA and a bachelors is enough for public accounting.

An MST probably helps and may carry some weight but I'd focus on the CPA.
