Out of curiosity, how does one get out of Tax or make a career change? I’ve been pondering about this question for a little while now. I worked 3 years at Ernst & Young and left as a Sr. Tax Associate. Currently, I am in industry working in the tax department of one of the nations largest steel manufacturers. I have now come to the realization that I do not want to do this for the rest of my life!! I want to make a change, but don’t how or where I can apply my experience. Does anyone know someone or has gone through this before?

I think you are going to need to figure out what it is you want to do. You have been working in tax for a few years now. Do you want to stay in a tax role or venture into something else?

When I first started working in internal audit a few years ago after a year of being in the field they would ask us what was it that we enjoyed about auditing and we were to be more specific with the areas that we liked. This helped in narrowing down whether one would have been suited for a financial role or accounting role.

I am so ready for this nightmare to be over. Been at this way too long.

I would like to see if I could venture out of accounting specific roles. What I mean by this is I would like to get into an accounting related career, but not limited to doing accounting tasks only. For instance, one career that comes to mind would be a special agent for the FBI, which looks for people with accounting experience all the time. Only thing wrong here is that they are on a hiring freeze :-(.
