Hi friends. Haven’t posted here since passing the exam, but I figured this is the best place to turn for some career advice. Hoping y’all can share your opinions.

Currently, I’m a Senior Internal Auditor for a Fortune 500 manufacturing Company. I came from a 3 year stint in public. After a lot of success in my current role, I been asked to partake in an internal interview for a Plant Controller gig. A big leap no doubt. Executive leadership in the finance organization places a tremendous amount of importance in plant experience. I believe taking the opportunity is a strong step towards upper management.

Here’s the catch. The job requires relocating 4.5 hours away. Here is the bigger catch. MY WIFE IS PREGNANT AND COULD LITERALLY GIVE BIRTH ANY MOMENT NOW. This is our first kid and all of our family and support system is in our current home town.

How do I approach this? I don’t want to give them the impression that I don’t want more for myself and my career and I don’t want to give the impression that I won’t sacrifice for my Company. FWIW, I love my Company. But family is so so important. I’m struggling deciding what the best decision for my family is….

I’ve also only been in my current role for a year and a half. I guess I’d say I’m still hesitant towards cementing a true career path in operations. I’d love to grow within IA, but I also know how beneficial plant controllership experience would be. Thoughts and opinions are greatly appreciated.

Do the interview and let them know about your wife. If they are a good company they'll work with you to help you and your wife and child transition.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? Go with your gut. Which of the 2 decisions gets you closer to where you want to be.

You're questioning your own family's livelihood for your chitty job?

I think the answer is pretty obvious.
