Can't get a job in Public. Accent problem??? - Page 3

I had quite a few interviews with different mid-sized to large public accounting firms, but a phone interview rarely resulted in a live interview, and I never got any offers so far. I have no idea what they are looking for…

I worked two tax seasons as a Tax Prep for small accounting firms. I worked full-time while in college, and I’ve been working for a little more than a year as a Staff Accountant for quite a large company where I deal with all kinds of financial accounting issues all the time. I passed FAR and REG, taking AUD in couple days.

Resume-wise I should be in pretty good shape. In my cover letter I mention that passed those CPA parts. So, tax + fin. accounting experience = should be ideal for midsized accounting firms, where accountants do both, audits and taxes. What the hell? I am just curious. I am originally from another country, and I do have an accent, but it’s not thick. Maybe that’s the issue. Because the recruiters say that their ideal candidates should have PERFECT communication skills. That’s the only reason I could think of. Anybody? Anybody have any experience working with people who have accents???

Job and social environment in UK is very different than the us. My understanding is that in the uk academic achievement is given far more consideration in social standing. US has a more of a anti academic elitist snobs perspective and people think more along of the line of whether the person they are interacting with its someone they would want to have a beer with.

Great point ScarletKnightCPA. I always thought the douche-bag (can I say this on the forum?) jocks would lose after high school. In America, especially in consulting (my field), it's all about the happy hours, suits, and schmoozing. There are some idiots in some pretty high up positions in IT/business consulting that don't deserve what they have. As for the nerds, the accents, the damn minorities (I am Asian), etc need to just step up their game. This is the world we live in…

Disclaimer: I am not a jock or a nerd. Just a really cool ass dude in the middle – lol.

FWIW, most foreigners studying in the US have MUCH better grammar than Americans.

    LastChance, how was your test?

Hey Coloradoit. It went well. Crossing my fingers but I might finally be a CPA 🙂

MCQs remained difficult throughout the exam and I think I nailed the SIMs. I honestly think I got one SIM wrong. I used the AL for two SIMs. I will update you in three weeks…

@Last Chance, Yesss!!!!! Looking forward to score release! Fingers crossed.

Someone said on this thread that in Europe, they look for intelligence but in the US, people can sometimes be almost offended by someone's intelligence and they much prefer someone they can have a beer with (paraphrasing).

I have realized that in the US, that is how people vote, as well. It seems much of the public doesn't want qualified, intelligent candidates; they want someone who seems like they would be on their level. I mean, how else do you explain most of these idiots running?

    sarah palin lol.

I lived in Europe England is much like US. I live in other parts also. Its more social Gov takes care of their people. Pay more taxes though but nobody cares bc nobody has to worry abt health insurance equal education for all etc. Its easier, America is great if there is work etc but we all saw what happened when the economy went south the Gov do not give a shit abt their ppl sad how many hard working americans lost their home living in cars soooooo sad. I live in 3 world countries too they suck unless ur rich money talks big time… Every country has their ups and downs, I cant complain abt America, i got a degree lots of opportunity and was for the most part treated very well…
