I reached out to a partner of a firm who audits my company asking if there might be an audit position available in the future. I have not heard back from the firm and thought they were not interested in me.

The firm reached out to the CFO and controller of my company to get a permission to interview me, which I was not aware of. I’m just a staff accountant, not be able to influence my company at all.

It turned out that CFO and controller were so upset. They never knew that I’m working on CPA and passed 2 parts. We had a talked this morning and I explained that I just wanted to see what it’s out there, not gonna leave now and blah blah blah. I thought it was fine after the talk. 5hrs later, I was told that my company let me continue my job! So they thought about firing me during that time! I was like wowww unbelievable. I posted this because I was so chocked to what happened and just want to be aware of what might happen in the future during job searching. If anyone can share your job hunting hurts your current job, I really appreciate that.

Also can my company not allow me to interview with this firm?

It sounds like you're not a good match for this company. They want people who will spend their whole career there. You don't want to do that. Nothing wrong with that. Now you know to keep it on the DL until you have a job offer.

Even thought they knew, they would not promote me. Believe me, I'm not that that dump not knowing things around the company. They promote alcoholism and sleeping around people. They never ever hire a CPA and has no interest to do so because of low compensation. I had no way to know this before I took this job. All I can do now is I really have to kill this interview and hopefully get an offer..and run!

zyx11 – remember in your interview that what you say may go straight back to your company. do not say anything negative about them during the interview. do not mention your conversations about reaching out to the audit firm for a job. be positive and professional.
start looking for other jobs with other firms.

There are definitely ways to figure some of these things out before you accept an offer even if the company won't tell you outright. LinkedIn is a good place to start, look up the firm and look at the profiles of the employees. Do they have progressive job titles, do many people leave after a short time, are many of them CPA's. And don't be afraid to ask directly “why is this job available?” Which will tell you a lot. People particularly early on in their career forget the interview process is just as much about the candidates interviewing the employer as the other way around. You spend more waking hours at work as you do anything else in your life, don't leave so much to chance.

Thanks lot monikernc&mla11692, I definitely learned from that. It was my own fault. I wish I knew about another71 before I took this job. I truly appreciate your honest comments. This is the biggest mistake I've ever done!
