Calling after job posting closes?

To give background, this is for an accounting internship for the state. I have already applied to a few permanent jobs around my state. I got phone calls for an interview the day or two after these postings closed and interviewed within a week. I didn’t get either, but one manager really liked me and suggested an internship to gain experience. She called the manager in my area to see if there was an internship available, and she gave me his contact information. I had also applied to his office for a permanent job which had closed a week before I called. I talked to the manager and he sounded eager to have an intern in the office and he would have to get in contact with the headquarters to see if he could get one. He also asked if I had applied to the permanent job and that he had just got the applications that day (1 week after closing). The next day the job posting was online so I applied. Anyways, it has been 2 weeks and a day since the internship application closed and I haven’t received a call for an interview or anything. Should I call him to see if he needed anything else or something like that? I was really excited that I might have a chance at this. I had a recommendation from the managers I interviewed with in a different location. Now I am worried because it’s been so long and I haven’t heard anything!? What do you think I should do? Keep waiting or should I call?

Just to clarify, this position is for a government job? If so they all tend to move at half the speed of smell so I wouldn't get worried yet. I used to work in govt and I saw positions sit empty for a month or more before someone was hired.

Try to be more patient. Remember, there could be other managers, HR personnel, Budget, etc involved in the process. Could be that there is a stack of applications sitting on the hiring managers desk, and he/she just hasnt gotten around to it yet. 2 weeks really is not very long at all. Or maybe the managers assistant or HR hasn't even gotten around to compiling the internship applications yet. These people still have their regular day-to-day responsibilties to take care, in addition to selecting the interns, so try to keep that in mind. I know for those of us waiting to hear back, this phone call is the single most important thing in the world, but for the person on the other end making the phone call, its probably a lot lower priority.

Sounds like you've already got a good head start in this process. A week or two, or three passing is not going to change that. The manager isnt going to “forget” about you just because he/she has let a few weeks go by.

Thanks for your responses. I just got worried because the other offices called me so fast after the application closed and this one didn't. It is for a government job and I assumed it would take longer until I saw what the first two managers did. I guess I will just keep waiting. Thanks for your thoughts on this. 🙂
