Yep, that’s right, I quit my job. I’ll still be there until the end of the month though. It looks like that bookkeeping business I’ve been talking about will be fired up even sooner than I had initially planned. That’s okay.

I’m just not cut out for sitting in a cage (cubicle) all day and doing as I’m told. Admittedly, I’m not the best with authority or too much structure. I like to do things my way, and I don’t want my creativity stifled. Also, I’m not one to just bend over and take it (lube or no lube) when someone tries to give me the shaft–a quality isn’t appreciated by my employer.

Anyway, I’ve got some basic business cards printed up and I put up a very basic placeholder web page that contains my contact info. I’m still researching how to run a successful bookkeeping business and designing my site and other marketing materials. This will be an adventure.

I plan to supplement my bookkeeping income for awhile with temporary accounting work and other consulting/contract gigs.

Watch out 2012! Here comes T-rex. Rawrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Holy Cow! very cool news. I am really happy for you. Not to mention, this is inspiring 🙂 Who says accounting and creativity can't marry? I think that is what will set you apart from your competitors. Being able to straddle both sides of the fence is unique, not every accountant wants to face a client, also not every accountant wants to flex his creative muscle, so to have the whole package is an advantage for sure. Please keep us in the loop, I would love to hear how this grows and evolves. I trust you will fly!

This is timely for me because I have been doing work for a prior client. I am doing mostly bookkeeping and actually some operating objectives as well. I work for a franchisor in a growing business(cupcakes, yum!). I wear many hats so it has been fun and challenging. The owner has been finding me other clients who need help with their books and now I am faced with the decision, of do I really want to grow this? Do I have the time to do so? I was actually planning in my head that my CPA would lead me to this, but in ten years or so. I wasn't ready to jump into this just yet. But then again, I had planned on being finished with cpa exams by now. But the thought of flying solo sounds good!

I digress! I am excited to hear your great news.

    Thanks, yankee!

I'm glad you're getting an opportunity to wear so many different hats! That's an excellent way to learn all sorts of new stuff. I hope that your many different hats include cupcake taster. It's hard to know when to jump in to something. I knew that I wasn't ready while I was studying for the CPA exam, but since that's behind me, there's really no reason for me not to give this a go.

Accounting + Creativity = Illegal (sometimes)

Wouldn't it be funny to call your business something like the following?

    Creative Bookkeeping, LLC

    Cooking the Books, LLC

    Creative Accounting, LLC

I actually am creating a somewhat non-traditional image for my business–professional meets quirky and creative. Even my LLC name is a bit quirky, but it's also catchy and unique. And no, it's not T-rex Bookkeeping, but that did cross my mind.

I'm interested in seeing how this will pan out!

PLEASE keep me posted on how its going. I'm looking to do the same thing and just landed my first bookkeeping gig for a small online retailer. I am hoping it will lead to replacing my current income and then some with referrals and eventual advertising and that I will be self employed within 18 months. I want to know EVERYTHING so please even if you think you are boring me with details, email me.

Congrats on the new bookkeeping gig, mla! If you can get enough referrals, you may not need to advertise. I'll bet you can be self-employed much sooner than 18 months. Make sure to tell everyone you meet that you are looking for bookkeeping clients.

Awesome! I'm just 3 weeks into my first career job doing tax/audit and I'm already beginning to think about how to run my own company one day! Keep us update on the news of your new endeavor. Don't be ashamed to plug your website once you have it up and running, I'd like to check it out!

@cannot, That's great that you're already thinking big! I really think that running your own show is where the money and freedom are at. Being chained to a cubicle only gets you so far, but with your own show, the sky's the limit! Why make others rich as you slave away?

Congrats! and thanks for the inspiration. I like your formula (accounting + creativity), it's so funny. 🙂 I am actually planning to have a side job as in bookkeeping/auditing after I get my CPA. I like my current job, but I also plan to retire early. I am thinking having my own business is a way to afford early retirement. I would suggest don't limit yourself on bookkeeping. You are a CPA now! you can do so much stuffs! btw, did I mention CONGRATS? 🙂

I don't think he's been an active poster in the past year. I did this (and then took another job when the offer fell out of the sky, don't want to call it “failing”), it's hard work but can pay off if you have the money and ability to stick out the initial 2-3 lean years.

If I remember correctly, T-rex is female. Either way, there are no PMs on this forum. I think spam was the issue, with cheating a concern as well.
