So I have a BA in accounting, MS (non accounting) passed all 4 parts of CPA exams. (I’m laden with student loans) I got a job paying $12/hr in a small CPA firm. Am I cutting myself short???? I’m hoping that I’ll gain experience, get my license after a year and bounce if I don’t get a raise.

    sigh sigh sigh

ken2013 – why don't you contact a recruiter? I have a good recruiter that I have used in the past in NYC if you want his contact information.

    A - 75
    B - 78 God is good.
    F - 77 Answered prayers.
    R - 84! Done!!

Paperwork sent - waiting for license!!
Still on a cloud and in shock. Through God, all things will happen.

@ken2013 – now that ur done with the exams … i am guessing you already have a profile on linkedin … find a recruiter as DeterminedCPA mentioned through linkedin also try career fairs and networking events in ur area. join the AICPA chapter in ur area ASAP …. forget ur past experience ur education alone should be good enough for a salaried position with a decent comparable salary

There must be something you're not telling us, or a truth you're unwilling to admit.

You say you're not getting any interviews… so what's the problem. Passing the CPA, assuming you are eligible for the license (except the experience requirement), is a big first step. Now, the hardest part is networking your way into a real job that utilizes your skills and qualifications.

How many recruiters/hiring managers/anyone-who-might-be-hiring do you contact every day? If the answer is not at least one email per day, you're not doing enough.

At least you can get CPA experience here, but I'd be looking for a real job if for nothing else than to make some decent money.

No one is just going to hand you a job. It is understandable that it's much more difficult to find work when you're no longer in school and can't access the career center/campus interviews, but you can't change that now.

    @fuzzyfro,

if there is a “truth I'm not telling” then I must be oblivious to it. Sometimes I take off MS or I don't include cashier job. that's only variation in resumes I send out.

Anyways, I will follow all the advice given. Thanks a bunch.

@determined CPA, I'd love the recruiter's contact info. Thanks

$12 an hr in NYC???!!! NO WAY!!!! I live in NYC too and I even a simple hostessing job in a restaurant would pay more. YOU ARE DEF CUTTING YOURSELF SHORT.. as an inexperienced starter you should know get anything lower than 45K. Run away from the firm where you're in!

    FAR - 82
    AUD- 91
    REG- 81
    BEC- 78

If it's important, you will find a way... if not, you will find an excuse. LET 2014 be the year!!!!

If you're not getting interviews there is something wrong with your resume. Understood that you don't have accounting experience but that applies to recent grads as well who manage to find work. I'd definately get someone with a keen eye and honesty to look it over for you. I'd say that you've somehow not presented yourself appropriately on paper.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.
