So I have a BA in accounting, MS (non accounting) passed all 4 parts of CPA exams. (I’m laden with student loans) I got a job paying $12/hr in a small CPA firm. Am I cutting myself short???? I’m hoping that I’ll gain experience, get my license after a year and bounce if I don’t get a raise.

    sigh sigh sigh

Yes you are, definitely. In my opinion though, which part in the US?

$12 an hour? Are you working in an isolated region of the world or something?

Do you have any other benefits on top of that (like full health insurance paid)?

ken2013, you are definitely selling yourself short! That is right around $25k a year. I have learned the hard way that you have to stick up for yourself and do what is in your own best interest. If they will not pay you closer to what others pay entry level CPAs in your area, you need to find something else.

    FAR 12/3/14, 87
    AUD 2/3/14, 90
    BEC 4/1/14, 88
    REG 5/27/14, 94

In my limited knowledge and understanding of the world, there is no reason you should be accepting an hourly position in the Accounting field with a Bachelor's, let alone if you have an advanced degree and have passed The Exams. Your entry-level should be a salaried-professional position by education virtue alone. The experience is good for you in the mean time, but you should be looking to bounce now. Keep applying and good luck!

Here is the other side of the coin. Can you show your boss/partner what value you bring to the firm? Do you know what your utilization/realization rate is (billable hours x hours worked in a day)? If you are billable 80% of the day and they are making 50$ an hour off of you, I would certainly challenge that…

wow! well you guys I have spent atleast a year trying to find work, and ended up working part time in retail, (cashier). I live in NYC (expensive city). I thought that if im going to be underpaid, I may as well learn something in my field. I rarely get interviews (really don't think it has anything to do with resume format. I know I have no real experience).

during tax season, somebody wanted to pay me minimum wage. Really???? I declined. FML.

@polar, I'm hoping to work hard and @ month mark, consider asking maybe for raise.(ha fear of being unemployed and back cashiering limits me)
