My positions in accounting have always been at really small firms doing tax and auditing. Think 4-10 employees. Lately I have hated getting up and going to work each day. I literately go to the office and sit in a room all day by myself. I have work which I don’t mind doing but most of the communication at my firm is done through email so very little face to face contact with clients. There are only 4 of us at the office and there is a huge age gap between the others and me. I am feeling isolated and am hoping to gain insight on collaboration and teamwork at a larger firm. Prior to accounting I was an HR Manager and really enjoyed the management part of my job, but I also love the analytical and problem solving aspects of accounting. Hence why I changed to accounting.
I am thinking of looking for a position at a larger firm or in private accounting at a larger company that might provide a team environment. My work tends to be predominately tax, compilations, and CFO accounting as we do few audits. Is there any teamwork associated with tax at larger firms or would I need to take the audit route?
I know going to a larger firm also means giving up my flexibility which I must admit I am a little hesitant about. But I dread sitting in a room all day by myself in an office that is so quiet all you hear is the ac turning on and off all day.
Are my expectations of collaboration and teamwork at a larger firm realistic? Is there any teamwork in a private accounting setting?
