Best way to contact firms that don't recruit on campus?

    Hi All,

    I’ve been perusing the list of firms who recruit via my grad program in the fall, and noticed some firms I have been interested in are not represented (my school is well recruited but it isn’t quite big enough to bring in all the nationals). Is the appropriate route to find and express interest to recruiters for these firms on linkedin during recruiting season?

    Depending on where you live you can do a number of different things. If there are other universities/colleges that are hosting those national firms you are interested in you can attend that university's career fair and express your interest that way. I have noticed from past experience that recruiters have been impressed with candidates who to above and beyond the scope of their job search to find employment or internship opportunities. It says a lot about the candidates character and ambition.

    You can also join your state's society for CPAs. I found this especially helpful because your state society obviously have strong ties to regional and national (Big 4) firms in your state so the network your exposed to is greatly strengthened. And of course if you know anybody already in the industry and you are looking for a plug to get your foot in the door that strategy is useful as well.

    These are some of my alternative suggestions to LinkedIn, which is definitely a useful sight to find jobs but the alternatives I have proposed to you allows you to meet the recruiters directly were you can express your interest and qualifications rather than in cyber space where you lose that personal connection you want with the recruiter to follow up with. Hope my suggestion helps you. Take care and best wishes to you.

    Thanks for the input!

    I can definitely try to go to another school's career fair (I have one in mind), though I'm not sure if the school I'd go to allows in outsiders. I could go to my Alma mater's career fair, but they have a very similar set of firms.

    Joining the state society is a great idea, I know New York has a very cheap student membership option I could use to attend some events/conferences and possibly meet some people.

    If you graduated from a public university in California you can go to other recruiting fairs if you pay $70 and become an alumni. i graduated from a UC and was able to go to two recruiting fairs at Cal States. You could also try enrolling in one class at a university and see if you get in that way.

    I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

    "Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

    @Monk:

    I'll have to check if something similar exists for the SUNY system, that would open up a lot of different career fairs.
