Best place to buy textbooks?

I’m getting ready to start classes at a community college to get the additional 22 hours I need to reach 150. I’ve been out of school awhile, so I’m just wondering where everyone gets their textbooks from these days? I checked the college bookstore, and the books I need for my first set of classes are both over $200 each. I’m hoping there’s a cheaper option online. Thanks!

Amazon and Barnes & Noble have some good deals on textbooks. I bought my Adv. Acct book at B&N for $5.95 brand new when the campus bookstore was asking $295. I could have made some money on that deal but I didn't think quick enough!

I figured out that most of my classes only used about 8-10 chapters out of a 20+ chapter textbook. If you can get the syllabus for the class and figure out you're only using a handful of chapters, you may be able to download .pdf versions of each chapter VERY inexpensively from echapters.com.

You can also rent textbooks but it isn't very cost effective.

    Half.com has some good deals.

These are great suggestions… thanks so much ladies! I checked and all of these places are cheaper than the bookstore. E-chapters has 1 of the books but not the other, so once I get the syllabus I'll see about going that route. The courses are only 8 weeks long so I can't imagine they would cover an entire book in that time frame. Thanks again 🙂

I always got the past edition of the textbooks my professors used in class! The editions they used ran about $300 and I could get a past edition for about $10 on Amazon. Sure, page numbers and chapters were different, but the overall content was the same. I saved tons of money!

I usually use half.com to buy majority of textbooks in college. I actually rented two of my textbooks last semester and they are very reasonable. It worked out really great. I could write notes on them and not worry about selling them back when I was done with classes. I also used amazon.com before. I usually compared the prices on both sites, and they are both great options.

P.S. Congratulations on REG!!! 😀 Now you don't have to worry about the “Y” and everything is filled and checked 😉

You guys rock! I was in shock that the books I needed cost almost as much as the class, but now I see that I have other options or can purchase them much cheaper than the bookstore 🙂 Thank you SOOOOOOOO much!!

@stefiva – ha ha… I was just trying to convince myself that Y meant I had credit for it. I actually used the “Chat” feature on the VBOA website to ask them, but it turns out that it's not really a chat but just goes to them as an e-mail. They got back to me the next day stating exactly what you said. I did login this morning to confirm everything was updated and it was 🙂 What part of VA are you in?

I see 🙂 I assume you are taking classes at PVCC?

My original plan was to take classes through PVCC, but a few days ago I discovered that NVCC has many more options so I've decided to do that instead. They have some online classes in both accounting and business that I didn't take at VT, and a lot of them are only 8 weeks long for 3 credit hours.

    UPDATE:

I researched all of these options and most of them were about the same price give or take a few dollars. I also couldn't use an older edition of the book b/c it's a Principles of Federal Taxation II class, and lots of things have been updated. I decided to go to the website of the bookstore where I got my undergrad degree, and it led me to this site…

    http://www.neebo.com

The textbook was a little bit cheaper there, but then I found a coupon code on http://www.retailmenot.com for an additional 20% off!! So I got it brand new (I needed the 2013 edition and nothing was available used) for $159.04 and it's going for $227.95 on Amazon. Just wanted to share in case anyone else is in the market for textbooks.

I never buy my textbooks anymore. I always rent them from online places. The prices are great and I ship it back for free. Theres no hassle at all since they UPS to ship it back for free and theres one near my house.
