AnonymousInactiveShould I tell my potential employer that I’m 5m pregnant? If not and if I get the offer, how long after that should I tell them? Thanks a lot!

AnonymousInactiveNO! Don't tell them! Honestly it's not like you're lying because they shouldn't ask you if you're pregnant anyway and that shouldn't be a deciding factor in being hired. I wouldn't want being hired based off if I was pregnant or not.

ScarletKnightCPAParticipantIt's illegal for them to take your pregnancy in consideration, and they are not allowed to ask, but they would consider it (I've seen it). Don't tell them.

PurpleKParticipantIt sounds like you will need to take maternity leave during busy season if you are working in public. Though it may still be problematic in private if your company is reporting around then. Of course you are under no obligation to tell them.
If the job is in public then not telling them can only end badly for you. Even though you cannot be fired for taking maternity leave, if you do not make up the billable hours you missed out while on leave, you can be let go for failing to meet expectations. Also if you ever hope to get a reference from the employer in the future they will probably note your lack of foresight and responsibility for letting the team know well in advance so they can prepare for it. Mid to large firms have dozens of other metrics to measure performance so be prepared.
If I were you, I would let them know you really want to work for them but cannot start until after you take leave.

fuzyfro89ParticipantIf you get an offer and accept, it's probably prudent to let them know you will likely be taking maternity leave of XX weeks/months and around what time that will happen.
I would probably no tmention it during the interview process… mostly because you are not required to do so.

StephAVMemberI would take the offer/accept and then let them know right away. 5 months is pretty far along and they'll need to plan for your maternity leave coverage. You do not have to tell them, but IMO telling them as soon as you can without hurting your chances of getting an offer is the right thing to do. I'd have a maternity leave proposal worked up for them too. As in this is my due date and my plan is to work until this date and return on that date.

mla1169ParticipantI wouldn't mention it until an offer is made but I certainly would tell them before day 1 of working. No they can't discriminate against you because you are pregnant but they most certainly can hold you back in your career if they hire someone who knows in 4 months they will need significant time off and doesn't give the heads up. And many states are employment at will states meaning as long as they don't “say” they're firing you because they found out that you were pregnant they can legally get away with firing you for just about anything.

LindrobeMemberI totally agree with PurpleK. If you would be on maternity leave during busy season, I would let them know that you cannot start until after your maternity leave. It is really not fair to others on your team that will have to pick up the slack for you.
I work in tax and recently found out that my coworker is pregnant and due right in the middle of tax season. I was looking for a new job anyway, but majorly ramped up my job hunt because I do not want to be responsible for all of her work too when she goes on leave!

AnonymousInactiveI would hold off for a bit, then look for a job while on maternity leave. Or tell them you are pregnant and ask for your employment to be deferred.
I just think that anything you do with this new employer won't remove the bad taste they'll have in their mouth. The problem is that being pregnant is legally “non of their business”. Th problem is that it IS their business.
It sucks and it probably borders on illegal, but you may find yourself without a job when you return form maternity leave.

ScarletKnightCPAParticipantWell I think that part of the question is do you plan on taking maternity leave? We interviewed a person who was due next week but she was not going to take maternity leave, so it wasn't an issue at all.
