InactiveHello all,
I got an offer for a bank teller position, which I am thinking about doing for three months during the summer.
My goal is getting into public accounting after this and seriously wondering whether this experience will really make my resume different….. I really did not know much about the job and my friend told me about the reality of bank teller position.
Basically what she is saying is ” It’s not really related to accounting. You are overqualified. Just focus on your CPA this summer.”

ParticipantThe teller position is heavily customer service oriented. There is cash handling experience but no real ‘accounting' work. The biggest pro out of this job will be the customer service experience as CPA firms like to see people who have dealt with the public and can handle themselves in different scenarios.
If you have nothing else to do this summer but study it wouldn't be bad to pick this up.
What is your other work experience?

ParticipantI currently work at a bank as a retail banker at a branch. One thing you want to know going in is the security. Ask tem if they've ever been robbed. Are you behind protective glass? Is it in a nice neighborhood? You don't want someone sticking a gun in your face working a summer job making 10 dollars am hour. My bank got robbed and although I wasn't the one they did it to it wasn't fun. The though of it happening again isn't good. I'm hoping to pass these tests soon so I can get out

Inactive“ahugemistake” thanks for the comment. My previous experiences are pretty diverse. (teaching, treasurer, project coordinator..) I also made it to the office visit interviews with two of the Big 4 last year. But I did not get an offer. I want to try big 4 recruiting again this fall.

Inactive“Ajaz0810” that must have been so scary. seriously…. But the bank that I am going to work is located inside big international organization. It'a basically a credit union that I deal with members of the organization. Strict security to get into the building.
Though with your bank experience, do you think it's relevant to accounting and will give positive impression to interviewers in public accounting?

MemberHi Allison. I was a bank teller while I was in college and I do not think that the work is relevant to accounting. If you have had no other paid jobs before and cannot get any type of accounting internship this summer, it would be better than nothing.

InactiveI worked as a bank teller for 2 years while finishing college before getting my first public accounting jobs. My job history, in order, was college cafeteria, grocery store cashier, bank teller. I have no doubt that having bank teller on my resume helped a lot more than just being a college cafeteria dishwasher! But, it wasn't as helpful as if I'd had an accounting internship.
Basically, bank work is not accounting, it's not that strongly related to accounting, but it's better than something like scrubbing floors at a fast-food restaurant. 😛 It's all relative. Most employers like to see current employment history, so generally having a job is better than having no job when job-hunting. A bank job indicates several things that are useful in an accountant, since it's a job that requires confidentiality, working with the public, some attention to detail, etc. However, you don't look at GLs, you don't work with GAAP or the IRS, or anything like that. Basically what I'm saying is that a bank job won't make you a shoo-in, but it won't hurt anything, either.
For me, my first accounting job happened to be working for a guy who had worked in a bank prior to starting in public accounting, so during my interview it gave us something in common to discuss – grabbing the air freshener as soon as certain customers walked out because the smell was overwhelming, random things like that. However, if he hadn't been a former teller, that wouldn't have helped, so I know that was a unique situation.
P. S. And people outside of the accounting world usually think it's got a lot more to do with accounting than it really does. My dad – who has worked senior positions in the business world all his life – told me over and over again how being in a bank was almost like accounting and would really help me get an accounting job and no amount of me saying “It's not really accounting…” would convince him. 😛

Inactive“Lilla” Thanks a lot for your comment. I was like your dad because I thought “banking is definitely accounting and even the title says ” account service representative.” haha Sorry it might sound stupid… I also think that any experience in life is good and I have another offer for a small company as an accounting assistant. I am trying to do both. (teller and assistant)
The teller position requires (10-3) and assistant (3:30 until later). But I was thinking about not taking teller position and focusing more assistant position.
I might have office interview with a local firm next week. If I get that internship, I won't take teller position.
Thanks again for your comment! Have a great weekend! 🙂
