What type of background checks will I most likely see for a small/regional accounting firm? The reason I ask is because I work in corporate accounting now and want to make a move to public accounting in the next few months. My current boss in corporate knows that I want to leave and pursue better things and I think he doesn’t want me to do that at all. He tries to talk me into staying with the company, which has no potential for growth and the training just outright sucks. I’ve been there a year and hadn’t learned much about their accounting other than data entry inputting into the ERP system. So in my efforts to move on I let him know that something will happen soon for me so he needs to make arrangements to get prepared to hire someone else to fill my position. When the firms that I’ve already interviewed with call my current employer and ask about my job duties/responsibilities, start/end dates, salary, etc. I’m scared he may say something negative to try to keep me there because of the person he is. From the very beginning since i first started I can tell that he has some jealousy when I say stuff. I told him about the Big 4’s I’ve gotten interviews with and some major Fortune 500 companies that I’ve made it to 2nd/3rd round interview and even some have gotten offers with, he gives me this death stare like “why are you leaving me”? Anyway I just went on a little tangent, so about those background checks, what to expect and what are they looking for?
