I worked for a local firm for about 3 years and my title was staff accountant. I was primarily doing assurance engagements–compilation, review and audit. I asked my previous boss if it is okay to change my title to assurance staff when it comes to the employment background check (just to make it sound better), and he said fine.

However, he just sent me a photo of the employment verification form and listed my title as staff accountant, and put duties as “assist with various assurance engagements.”

Is the title mismatch going to be a deal breaker?

They will probably ask you about the inconsistency if they are worried about it. Hopefully you have an email to corroborate your story. The severity will depend on the company. Those are fairly similar roles, so who knows if it will be an issue for sure. Good luck.

Probably not. Their description of your duties is similar to the title you listed. And if they do it's a simple enough explanation.

That's interesting that they're doing that in-depth of a check and your company is complying. Some companies will only verify that someone worked there within the dates given and nothing more. I once worked for a company where you weren't allowed to be a reference without permission from HR and they had to approve it.

Than you. My previous boss is a very old school fashion person and takes everything very seriously so he fills in everything even though he is super busy with the tax season. That firm is very small (less than 10 people), and I do not think nobody worked there is hired by larger companies that require employment check….so he is not very familiar with the process like what's really need to be filled and what's not etc.
