I am planning on moving to CPA firms. I have passed 2parts. Ideally I want to pass FAR before look for an audit job in region/small firms. I work as a staff accountant in a private company, revenues roughtly 60-70M (might help figfure work load). I do AP around 60%, the rest are JEs, prepaid, fixed assets, expense reports, leases, coordinate annual audit and taxes and mist stuffs the controller asks. I have been here for over 2yrs. My question is, would I get a good shot at CPA firms? I just never had a luck in CPA firms before I passed my first part. Please give me some advice!

I don't want to be a killjoy, but I think will be hard to get your foot in the door – maybe a bit less difficult once you have your certification. You will be competing for an entry-level staff position with new grads focused on public accounting and don't yet have the breadth of experience to come in as Senior staff. Start networking with people you know in small/regional firms and get a feel for what they typically consider. The small firm I worked with only wanted fresh grads or Senior-level staff with a few years of public experience.

You know i was in the exact same position as you except i had only passed one exam. I had two years in private and doing pretty much what you do and i gave it a shot and i found a job in small CPA firm right away. So far it has been good and i feel like the two years in private definitely made the transition to public accounting easier. I would say start applying and you'd be surprise of how many people want you 🙂 Good luck!

I worked 15 months in a staff accountant role, just applied for an audit position at one public accounting firm and received an offer (I haven't taken ANY of the CPA exam) so yes, its very possible.

In fact, having passed 2 sections of the exam already, i'd say you'd be a very attractive candidate out there

Thanks everyone for your advice. I have made connections with auditors and tax people who have worked with my company. I feel I will get a good shot at these firms but I don't really how to reach out to them appropriately. As I mentioned that I want to get FAR out first. I know I will not have much time to study while working in CPA firm. My dead end job is very flexible and that is the only reason I am staying so I have time to study.

For tax people I know, is it ok to reach out to them and ask them to pass my resume to assurance department?
