Are there any employment agencies worth the time and effort?

I just finished meeting with a recruiter at Accountemps, and quite frankly, I do not think she heard a word I said.

I told her I was interested in a staff accountant position, and she tells me she has a cash application position available. I tell her I do not want to become a clerk with a CPA License. Her reply is the market is tough, and many are taking positions of lesser salary and position.

I tell her I recently passed all four parts of the CPA Exam, and I am in process of applying for the CPA License. She tells me good luck with passing my exam. ?????

I am wondering if some of these recruiters work on strictly commission and want to shoehorn anyone into any position that they have available.

I have worked with some amazing recruiters.

    Stephen Douglas and Robert half.

    Hope that helps!

I have worked with Robert Half too. My recruiter was absolutely amazing. Where are you located? If you are in the bay area, CA I can provide you my recruiter contact information.

Half the time, Recruiters will make up fake positions, it works like a bait – you will send them your resume , they will chat with you and then let you know that the client doesn't need to fill this position right away, but i have something for you , which sometimes wont even be of any interest to you.

Thats how they bring you in and make money from the actual position that is listed. they dont care if you are a good fit or not.

now again, i am saying in most cases , not all cases…..

    Hey Jasper,

I had similar experience with accountemps. I got the same response from accountemps person. I think, that is how they are taught to respond. In fact it is a division of robert half and if I were you, I would try to contact people at the firm you want to work at directly. I know it is hard, but if you get somebody to listen to your story, who knows.

    Good Luck!

I'm in New Jersey. It is nice to know that others have had similar experiences with recruiters. I was starting to feel that I made a mistake pursuing the CPA career path. I am just pursuing a staff accountant position. I would think that someone who passed the entire CPA exam and has accounting experience would at least be qualified for a staff accountant position. It's not like I am demanding a position as a CFO or even a controller.

    @Jasper

This is extremely unprofessional of her!

If I were you I would def. write a complain to her supervisor or would leave a bad review AT LEASE

Do you have any accounting experience? It's really hard to get IN if you have literally NONE. Accountemps can only offer you temporary positions, nothing stable and nothing solid…. it's going to be short-term assignments. Robert Half has a separate division for permanent placements, try to get connected with some recruiter from there?

    Good luck!

They certainly are commissioned based, but that doesn't mean they should act like that. In Spokane, WA the pair of recruiters are awesome, but as mentioned above, Accountemps is temporary jobs, Robert Half focuses on permanent positions, ensure you going down the right road.

Also said, Accountempts can lead to permanent positions, but that is not their “purpose”.
