Why do most A/P jobs I see require 3-5 years of experience? I honestly believe you could train a monkey to do an a/p job. I have 1 year of experience doing A/P and would love to get a job doing it for 1-2 years just to gain some base experience after college to get my feet wet.

From experience, A/P was honestly the easiest job someone could do. Why does it require experience?

The Controller I replaced entered bills when he received them, not based on the date of the invoice; if he never got an bill (but knew he owed the money) he didn't ever try to track one down; he never reconciled the vendor statement with A/P; he didn't feel the company ever owed finance charges so never entered them. He was getting paid $48k and apparently had “years” of experience. Apparently it takes a while (3-5 years) to train monkeys how to do it correctly!

Depends on the internal control structure of the company. If proper controls are in place, then yeah, a monkey can do the job. It all depends really on how much responsibility the A/P coordinator has.

Yes, AP work seems to be mostly paper pushing/data entry to me. I have done AP work as an intern, and it was very boring/dry/no brainer type of work. AP is also paid the least I believe while GL is paid the most. However, I think they want 3-5 years of experience because they probably don't want to train green horns the concept of AP and if you have 3-5 years of AP experience, you are probably a pro at entering data/filing.

I am just assuming all of this I have no clue really but from my company, that is what it looks like. I could be completely wrong.

I agree with you, i work in AP and its a VERY EASY job if all you need to do is enter invoices and pay vendors. I think they want 3-5 years experience so they have to spend less time training you. If you already know the ins and outs of General AP work then they only have to teach you their policy and maybe their accounting software.

Here's why-competitive job market with dozens if not hundreds of applicants for every open position. Why hire someone with < 5 years of experience when someone with 5 years experience is willing to take the same job for the same pay?
