Hey all, I was wondering if anybody here has ever had to or accepted an internship position after being done with school. If so, was it beneficial for you? Has it led to you getting a full time job wether with the same firm or another?

I’ve graduated two years ago, since then I’ve been working in audit but even in school I’ve always wanted to work tax. Past November I’ve departed from the audit firm, mainly concentrating on the exams. Having no relevant tax experience in public accounting, its been difficult to get interviews/offers in tax. Today, luckily I got an offer to work part time during the tax season in a top 10 southern california CPA firm. Fortunately its also paid, obviously a no brainer to accept the position, but would such short experience even help my resume/credentials much?

    Thanks 71

Wouldn't help your resume much but it could lead to a full time offer.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I did a tax internship after graduation. I graduated early in December so that I could get an internship in that Spring in tax. I also knew I was going back to get my masters in order to fulfill 150 hrs. Worked out well, but not exactly as I planned. I did the internship, then was actually hired by another firm that summer before going back to school. Changed my master's plans to night MBA classes instead of full-time student for one more year. Has all worked out in the end though (I have a job, master's degree one class away, and CPA license being sent my way).

I definitely think employers are willing to hire graduates for internship positions if they are looking to get into the field for the first time. Go for it.

I did an internship after graduation. It was for tax season work. I ended up with a job offer after the internship ended.

Getting to know some tax software is valuable. College basically doesn't even touch on the stuff you use everyday at work.

I accepted an internship/temporary tax position that started in January and ends April 15. It allows me (the employee) to experience a busy season and it allows the firm to get some extra help in the profitable months–rather invaluable considering that employees of a tax firm are overhead for about 6-7 months of the year.

I think it all depends on what you get out of it. Like for me, I accepted a ‘lower' position than I probably should have, however it will lead to quicker advancement, more hands on experience, and more freedom because not only do they not have a real ‘busy' season but they're small enough to where I can do my own thing. So I wouldn't worry too much about title, but the experience and opportunity it will give you. Personally to me it sounds like they'd hire you afterward, but you never know. As long as the job doesn't end at a whacky time to where it may make it difficult to transition to another position, i'd def go for it

I have a friend who graduated with his MAcc but couldn't find a job. He started out with Robert Half contract positions then he joined PWc as a tax intern. A few months later we celebrate his permanent offer from PWc.

Right now I have experience, I have a MAcc, and passed the CPA but will accept an internship position. It's a great way to get your foot through the door

    CPA - Since 2015
    CISA - Smashed 2012
    CIA - Passed 2015
