I haven’t logged in here for awhile. I passed the exams, got a job working in a 2 person, rural tax office for about 3 years.

I’ve been offered a private job working in accounting for a small nonmetallic mining company. I would be the only accountant and work with 3 other office personnel, and the business owner.

I want to take the position, but I must admit I am a bit nervous about the jump from public tax to private industry. I’d like to have a contact or two to be able bounce things off of. Anyone willing to exchanging e-mails or texts?

    Thanks.

This move seems short sited to me.
How old are the people in your tax office? Do you feel they are grooming you to transition to partner, or to take over the firm? How old are they?
Your potential career path at your current firm is to be self employed, be your own boss, set your own fees and hours. Work hard for tax season and slack the rest of the year.
I would be hard pressed to give that up for a 9-5 with virtually no upward mobility.

Time to have a heart to heart with your current boss and see where they see you in 5 years.

I should have clarified in my post that I have been without a job for about 8 months. I chose to leave the tax practice after my boss wanted to sell it. I didn't want to take over. It wasn't for me. I'm not looking to go back into tax, and this position opened up. Again, it is rural here with little other opportunities. While there is little upward mobility with this accounting/controller job at a mine, I can either have a job, or continue to not have a job.

Anyone with experience that would be willing to exchange e-mails, it would be appreciated.

I work for a 7 person sales and service office for a manufacturer in Europe. I enjoy being the only accounting person and enjoy having to wear many hats. It suits me well. If you do take it and don't love it get out asap because when I was job hunting a few years back I couldn't get even a staff accounting position at a large company even having years of accounting manager positions because I had niched myself into small companies.
