I have been working in corporate accounting for a relatively small company for a little over 2 years now. I have done well in my time here and have received compliments from multiple supervisors/managers over the course of my employment, and personally have not had many complaints about my job overall. It is pretty much a done deal that once my girlfriend is finished with school we will be moving and I will be looking for a new job, which will be in about one year max.

My dilemma however, is that one of our accounting supervisors is leaving in a month, and management has stated that they wish to fill the position with one of our current staff accountants (me included). Even though I am the youngest of the accountants, I have been with the company the longest and will be the only CPA (assuming I pass these last two).

So my question is, do I throw my name into consideration even though I know I will be leaving within a year? I personally feel like it would be unfair to the company and the other accountants if they did choose me (I am by no means guaranteed to get it) only for me to leave not long after. At the same time I feel like it would definitely be a positive for my resume.

Just wanted to get some other opinions on the matter. Thanks in advance!

    Go for it.

You don't know what will happen in a year for sure (you both might change your mind, etc), and a year of management experience will be awesome to have anyhow. If you are chosen and you still feel that you will leave soon, then you can pick one of your subordinates and start training him or her as your replacement. If you leave – the company will have someone else, if you don't – then you can move up and have someone competent to take your position.

I say go for it! If you don't you might regret it. If you do get it you are almost guaranteed to land managerial roles going forward.

    I agree.

A year is a long way away and you really can't make decisions today about a situation you believe will exist in a year. Why sell yourself short?

I agree, take it. A lot can happen in a year. I don't know your reasons for moving, but what if you and your girlfriend break up (sorry) and you decide not to move? You'll be left wondering what it would be like had you taken the position. Besides, I've always been told that when someone offers you something great, take it and figure the rest out later.

If you need to quit in a year for better opportunities elsewhere, I'm sure they'll understand.
