OK, I am a newly licensed CPA..Yay!! I’ve worked at a nice sized CPA firm, maybe 70 accountants and it seems no matter how hard I try I keep getting “below average” performance reviews. I don’t see myself as “below average” I just think I don’t work well with my big boss, but am always willing to improve. Because I am a high achiever (as we all are on this forum) it really sucks to get these reviews. I have heard that in professional firms, law, cpa, etc, that these type of reviews are typical to keep you on your toes? My co-workers all get poor reviews too, so I don’t think I am the problem. I think it is more of a gimmick, but it really depresses me. If you work in public accounting what are your performance reviews like? We have lost many accountants in the past few years and I don’t think it is because of busy season.

not the real answer but relevant: learn that adding ” ‘s ” to something does not pluralize it. i hate to sound like a dick, but that's highly annoying and should not be a mistake that a professional makes.

real answer: in b4, the average review is “average” from what policy states and what ive seen in practice. above average reviews are more common than below average reviews… but that's also because multiple below average reviews means its time for you to go.

You are absolutely correct on the ” ‘s”, not quite sure what I was thinking there. Maybe tax season has already gotten to me. However, you should know not to criticize someone on their grammar when you don't capitalize the first letters of your sentences. Also, not professional.

I have been promoted with these “below average” reviews. Not quite sure how I, along with my other co-workers, can all be “below average”.

I do appreciate your response. Good to see how the big 4 works.

I just got my 1st evaluation which is above average. Average is the most common though. Don't know anyone who got below average. I think it depends on your immediate supervisor. Some of them think below average is actually motivating. Why don't you just ask what/how they want you to improve?
