i’m currently in internal audit and have decided that this just isnt for me. Thru studying for my CPA exams, I’m discovered that I like tax much more than aud. I need more (better) experience so I can kind of change the trajectory of my career path at the moment, so I was wondering if I am a good candidate for a larger public firm. Maybe Big 4, but that’s not really a deal breaker.

    Undergrad GPA: 3.97

Masters in General Business- GPA above a 3.5

2 years work experience- Internal Audit and Govt Auditing

I know that now is definitely not the best time to start looking, so I’m probably going to stick it out here until May before i start looking. Hopefully by then I will be finished with my CPA journey!

I promise my communication skills are much better than that post. After rereading it, I'm embarrassed. HA.

CorporetteCPAintheMaking, where are you from? You have a very impressive undergrad GPA (almost perfect), where did you go to school?

Start looking now! You may not get a bunch of interest initially but you might be surprised. Either way I've never heard anyone lament they started looking too soon!

@Martin I'm located in south Alabama now. Limited Big 4 opportunities here. I went to a small school in Hattiesburg, MS for my undergrad. Lots of opportunities in the Hattiesburg area, as its respected locally, but not a big alumni base outside of there.

@mla i know firms aren't necessarily hiring at this time. Do you think I should just drop my resume off to a few local firms to try to get my name out there?

It really depends on whether or not you will be ready to make the switch if offered a job. I did not start looking until after the exam because 1–I have a job and I don't have to leave if I don't want to. 2–I put in a lot of hours at any new job teaching myself the systems used and familiarizing myself with the files, reports, and financials, procedures, etc. I did not want to consistently choose between studying for the exam and learning my new position after hours. That would be a hard choice for me. But if you are ready to make the move now and your only hesitation is that firms aren't hiring, you need to start putting your resume out there and see what pops up. You seem like a good candidate to me based on the information you provided. Good luck!
