Advice Needed – Cancel Interview?

So I’ve been at my current job for just over 5 years. It was really easy and borderline boring for the first 4, but now it is more challenging. I have been looking around after asking for a raise and being told that the amount I requested, “wasn’t going to happen.” That was back in October. I was pissed, to put it lightly. Although I have it good here… I just don’t get paid well, at all. They are encouraging me to get my CPA license and they are paying for it and promising, very vaguely, that good things will come when I pass. They were pretty much saying I’ll get a raise and promotion when I pass. I have a very promising interview scheduled for Thursday morning to take pretty much half the day. Meanwhile I’m trying to study for FAR and take care of my 2 young boys while my husband is working out of town. I’ve been doing really well at work, like amazingly well if I may say so myself… My boss’ boss finally decided today I do deserve a raise… They are giving me a $5k raise! I now would like to cancel the interview on Thursday. I’m so busy and I do like it here. My mom thinks I shouldn’t. I’m not sure, just thinking I should focus on what I have going on and passing the exam. Then if I’m still feeling underpaid I’ll look around. What would you do?

I think my thing is I just want to feel appreciated. Of course the more money the better, but if I feel like they care and appreciate the work I do then I’m content… At least for today.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!

LEAN IN as Sheryl Sandberg would say! See what's out there…you never know what you are worth until you look around…you don't have to accept an offer if you don't like it.

My boss is giving me a promotion but says that because I received a raise last year when no one else did, I can only receive an increase in my var comp…I have never heard of a base salary not being increased for a promotion but whatever…I will have direct reports so that is great for my resume…I am still going to look outside of the company because I think it's unfair…

    Florida:
AUD: 73, 81! Thank you Lord!
BEC: 73, 77! Thank you Lord! and WTB
REG: 71, 82! Thank you Lord! and A71
FAR: 72, 78! Thank you God and my Mommy in Heaven!

Well, if you receive a job offer from that other company, will you be willing to accept it? If your answer is “yes” or “maybe” or “I don't know”, then go to the interview and see what happens! But if you already decided to stay, and it sounds like you'd be better off where you are now while studying for the CPA exam, then cancel.

    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

If you change jobs now, you'll be stressed out and you won't be able to take time off and you will probably have to reschedule your exams…..

I feel like I MIGHT have regret if I don't go… But at the same time I really don't want to leave. I interviewed before the holidays for another job and I think I laid on the “I love my current job” a little too thick. I asked for $15k more as my minimum required (BTW, I freaking hate that employers ask all these salary questions before even interviewing). They asked me to send my application by today (after I had already scheduled the interview and was told to bring my application to the interview) and my possibly over thought reasoning is because they want to see my salary history. This week seriously could not be any busier for me…

Then there is the new job thing where it is hard to take time off, vs. current job I'm taking the days I have my exams off without using my vacation.

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!

Good decision! And trust me, I know it's hard! I accepted a job offer back in August and a week later I got a call for a job interview for the job I applied for a few weeks before. They wanted to schedule interviews in the week which was supposed to be my first week on the new job!!!! So, as much as I wanted to go, I had to decline the interview…. but I believe things happen for a reason, so you should be fine!

And it's probably annoying when they ask how much you make and how much you want to make – I never had this problem, since I work for the state and my salary is public info anyway – but at the same time, it saves you time – if you know what your minimum salary expectation is, you don't want to interview for the job which pays less.

Funny story – my friend interviewed for a staff accountant position and asked for $70K. He has 3 yrs experience with Big 4, but not license yet. They ended up hiring another person whose salary expectation was lower!

Ah, I think it was a mistake to cancel. I think we (as professionals) should always keep our ears perked and cognizant of market signals and changing demands. Just because you go to an interview doesn't mean you have to accept the job. Oh well, what's done is done! Good luck with the exam!
