    Hi,

I have been working in private accounting for a couple years and am thinking of switching over to finance so more analyzing and budget work. I am also currently studying for the cpa exams(but have not passed a section yet). I was wondering if someone could give me some advice – should I keep going for CPA even though I want to move towards finance? Or should I try and go for an MBA/something along that line?

I just don’t want any hard work going into the CPA to become a waste…although I’m thinking that it could help me out in the long run anyway?

    Thanks!!

Are you leaving accounting because you dislike it? If so, you probably won't want to go back at any point in the future so the CPA will be minimally beneficial to you versus an MBA. If you had already passed three sections, I'd say to go ahead and finish up, but it seems like you're not too “deep” into the CPA just yet.

I actually do like accounting, but am just wondering if I may enjoy finance more? So not just straight up journal entries and other accounting tasks everyday. I am putting in extra study time I didn't put in before so for now I am continuing with cpa.

In that case, maybe consider a hybrid Finance/Accounting role, perhaps a Financial Analyst position that does both forecasting and reporting.

ok cool – thanks for the help! I'm kind of in a slump right now and need a change so I'll look into that. and unfortunately there isn't someone at work I can really go to for advice…they'd just try and make me stay with what I'm doing.
