I am just wondering are salaries in Robert Half Accounting Salary Guide for 2015 true? It seems to me that their numbers are a little bit on the high side. Does anybody have any experience with that? I am just trying to understand the job market at my location, and like I said their number are off no matter what range/experience/company size you take.

I don't trust those because it depends on where you live. Cost of living is going to dictate the local market. I've never looked into it, but I assume they are using the national median which will work for some people, but will likely be too low if you are in NYC, San Francisco, etc.

I'm from South Alabama and they are way off base to our area. We always would pull up the guide and get a good laugh(cry) over what we were suppose to be making.

If you go all the way to the end of the salary guide it gives the adjusting factor by city. So you may find that some midwestern city is only 85% of the salary listed while NYC may be 130%.

I would say their salaries are way too high. I live in Boston and they have a multiplier of 130 or something like that but in reality, I would say it's probably close to about 115 from experience. Then again, accounting salaries have a huge range.

I would try looking up random companies similar to the ones you're interesed in on Glassdoor and find out salaries that way

I am quite aware of the adjusting factor by city and the whole point with their guide is that they do not use any medians or averages. Their statistics is supposed to be very representative because it is broken down by company, locations and what not. But if you compare with Glassdoor, it is off. Probably their cost of living adjustments are not correct. But I just wanted to confirm my observation about it. Thanks everyone!

I usually work for smaller companies, and the salaries vary so widely in private, small companies. RH is a good benchmark to start with but not applicable to every situation. It can also be difficult to place some jobs into their specific categories.
