How many letters do you needParticipantAccounting is a field that requires you to pay your dues. You start off working a million hours and traveling in public accounting or doing mostly mind numbing spreadsheets and clerk level work in corporate or something of that nature. If you ask somebody in their first year of an entry level job they probably like it. Ask somebody in year 3 of that same entry level job and they probably hate it (unless they just have an outstanding environment which can make even a mind numbing job a good one). However, once you pay your dues it can be extremely rewarding and interesting but you really have to love this stuff.
I was taking a hotel shuttle recently and the driver was a college kid…asked what I was in town for (doing a site audit) so we started talking about accounting and finance a little bit. Said he was interested in it and the advice I gave him holds true for anybody and most fields but especially so accounting.
Just be sure you love it, and enjoy it from a business and numbers perspective because the work itself can be incredibly boring, especially so early on. If you do it for any other reason you will want to shoot yourself in 5 years.

AnonymousInactiveWork sucks. They wouldn't pay you if it was fun. The level of suckiness that is your job is contingent upon you.

How many letters do you needParticipantI do think that part of the pain people have is from trying to squeeze their round peg of an ass into a square hole.
Nobody likes to struggle at their job, it just makes life so much easier if you just do what you are good at. Bobs right to an extent, all work sucks we can't all get paid to do what we love. But if we do what we are good at at least the road becomes a bit more smoothe

joelsephParticipant“I tolerate my job. I am a sales and use tax auditor” – That would also be my response if that was my job.
Assistant Controller for a IT staffing firm in Seattle. It's great because I get exposure to everything on a smaller staff and we've got an office on the water just north of downtown, company boat, gym, ping pong, parties, we like to have fun. I couldn't ask for a better spot at my age and as an accountant. Long gone are the days of public accounting for me, but the hours don't stop. In here on a Saturday, because that's what you do after your payroll accountant is let go.
If I had to work in an office park in the burbs I'd be miserable.

AnonymousInactive@wongl0786 … I did not switch material but I supplemented Becker with Ninja Audio. After failing, I skimmed each section of the book, then would do the MCQ for that section. I did this for every section and then did a bunch of progress tests. For the SIMs, know how to use the AL. It helped me with probably 3 or 4 of the SIMs.

Fil-AmParticipantMy job is okay at the moment. It is dull and not mentally challenging. I work in a local agency. No perks or value added for being a CPA given my current position as an accountant.
PAY – okay if single – IMO, it is not good.
Work Schedule – 37.5 hours per week
People – Great
Distance to Work – only 15 miles away from home
I started looking elsewhere now that I passed the CPA Exam. My CA CPA license application is in process. I would really be thrilled if I get a job and have a break into a corporate finance world.
Any suggestions? Just to give you an idea. 95% of my experience is with government industry. But, I really wanted to work in a corporate finance and trying to figure out how to break into.
Anything worth doing is probably not easy, but the rewards are worth it. (unknown)

michaelabs22MemberI really enjoy my job. I left public accounting to be the business manager for a few schools and now am the CFO for a school. The work life balance is great (love spending time with my wife/friends and starting a family soon) and the pay/benefits are actually very decent. I did not end up enjoying public accounting as much as I thought I would, but working in education is rewarding and has my attention.

StephAVMemberI'd say I love my job and hate the pay. I'm officially a Senior Accountant for a professional NPO association, but once I'm licensed I'll officially be promoted to Assistant Controller. I'm really looking forward to that. I think that will get me more respect within my department and better pay. It is an exciting time for our organization, lots of change and they are investing in my professional development. My boss respects me and my opinion. I'm learning a lot and growing. I sometimes get frustrated with the slow pace of change. We have amazing benefits and a 35 hour work week with lots of time off.
FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!

univegabwMemberI think I have gotten bored with my job. The problem in accounting is that you can master the role and you begin to build up a desire to do more. We don't study and put ourselves through hours of stressful testing to do the same thing over and over everyday with minimal use of our mind.
I do deferred revenue at my company…at least that is what I'm told. What I really do is pull data out of our accounting software and update a spreadsheet and formulas to calculate everything properly. Then someone else uses my data to do the actual entries and reporting.
I look for new opportunities all the time, but you gotta beat what you have and right now I have it easy, decent pay, a bike-able commute and work/life balance. So there is a trade off.
