Background: I work as a senior accountant/controller for a heavy equipment dealership in the Upper Peninsula. A little over a week ago, I was offered an analyst 2 position with a company much closer to home (I currently have a 45 minute drive). I declined the initial offer as it was basically the same rate I currently make. Yesterday, they called me with an analyst 3 title, 20% more, up to 10% bonus, and an extra week of vacation. I told them I would need some time to make a decision, and to give my boss notice since he is currently on vacation. They called back this morning and told me they wanted a decision in the next couple of days. I spoke with my boss today, and he wants me to speak with me on Monday to see if he can coax me in to staying. I have no major issues with my current company except for my current pay rate. Should I accept the offer, and then speak with my boss, and possibly rescind my acceptance if I decide to stay? Not sure that’s the best idea, but I might be faced with that possibility.

Are you currently licensed? If not, do you currently have in your possession your signed experience verification form?
If you burn your current bridge, is there someone at the new company to sign off on your experience if your current boss declines?

If you don't have any issues with the current job you have now I don't think there's any problems in seeing if your current workplace can match what's being offered. There is nothing wrong with accepting a job and then rescinding it later. If they want you bad enough, you might inadvertently start a bidding war too haha. If you rescind your acceptance, they're surely going to ask why and you can simply say your current work place ended up matching their offer. You have nothing to lose really. Now if your current workplace doesn't match the offer then I would say it's worth checking out the new job because a 20% bump in salary plus the increase in other benefits seems worth it.

Recked, I'm the only actual accountant at my current job. My title is technically controller, but I feel I'm overstating my duties to other accountants if I tell them I'm the “controller”. That being said, my experience will be signed off by a previous employer. We are still on good terms.

ML, I kind of agree, but I'm in a small town and don't want to burn any bridges with local employers. It's amazing what can get out in a small town. I'm supposed to receive the written offer sometime today or tomorrow. Hopefully the timeline to respond will be next week, and I won't have to worry about it.

Why does your boss need to wait until Monday to talk to you?

MaLoTu, He is on vacation (as stated in original post), and wants some time to figure out if he can come up with an amount to convince me to stay. It's all good though. The offer is good through Oct 8.

Oh I didn’t catch that. If you have time to wait until Monday then that is probably your best route as you won’t be burning bridges.
